students behavior
I let my students know that I have expectation regarding their behavior in my class I ask them ack in the some professional manner that I try to hold myself to I explain that during my thirty years working in the field that I am teaching now I have had tto learn to behave in a more professional manner and I am willing to help them to work to achieve the same goal. they seam to respect and work to follow my lead.
Hi Timothy,
There are many students with the attitude, "What is the instructor going to do for me?" Students must realize they must have the attitude that I am going to take full advantage of the instructor's knowledge, expertise, and professionalism to make the most of my soon to be career.

Robert, your point is a good one. Student's expectations at times are that of "what is the instructor going to do for me?" when, in all actuality, the question should be "what am I as the student going to do with the information provided?". Until someone enlightens them to the responsibility factor and the role it plays in their life they may never know the difference. I usually discuss what can be done with the information they have been given and how it can change their lives. This also shows them we are there to help and actually care for their well-being.
Hi Donald,
I like it how you make it known to your students on Day 1 that you will give them respect as well. Students generally will follow suit. I see that you handle your students if they don't follow suit.

I also let them know on the first day that they deserve and will get respect as an adult. This is how the classroom will operate. Most of them will show that same respect to me in return. Those that don't are usually guided by the rest of the class. This usually eliminates the ones that would create minor issues, and filters out those that need more attention and guidance. Those i take aside individually and have a talk to find out the source of the problem.
Students tend to seek to find ways to see how much they can get away with in order to avoid doing classwork.
My solution is to keep them motivated, interested, and working on some project or assignment. The results, they are succeessful in accomplishing their goals.
Sometimes I have to insist that they take their alloted break-time when they become so involved..
Hi Chuck,
For a lot of our students, we are their only role model. They learn professional behavior from us.
Patricia
I also have found that students emulate the actions of their instructors we must maintain our self’s at a higher standard.
The students usually will follow suit
I have found that besides laying out behavioral expectations that it is also important to lay out the educational expectations to the students as well. You need to have the students know that they are also responsible for their acedemic success as well. As instructors we can give them the information they need to succeed in the class but ultimately it becomes their resposibility whether they apply that information or not. This seems to go a long way toward gaining their respect and improving their attitude toward the class because now ownership of their results becomes theirs.
