my mistakes

I find that sometimes because I tend to be very busy in preparing for the current class or maybe try to get ahead for the next class, I am unable to detect student needs sooner.

Hi Martha,
You are right! They are totally lost after making a mistake. As the instructor, you ask questions to try to help them get back on track, and most of the time, the students answers I do not know. Then you have to continue to probe, tell me what step were you on when things went wrong or what was the last thing you did...response, I don't know. As instructors, students think we must be able to fix all mistakes...they simply want us to fix it!

Many students don't know what to do when they make a mistake so I turn my mistakes into a lesson on how to trouble shoot.

I make mistakes when my time gets away from me - especially when preparing for the next class.
I find it is important to have the students stay outside the lab before class so I can organize myself.
Many students want to get in early and talk to us and then I find I am behind.
It has taken me a while to see that setting limits before class makes their class time experience more organized.
I tell them they can come and see me during office hours or I tell them to come to skills class where it is a more relaxed setting.

Hi Rhonda,
Wow, your institution operates very much like mine. I have found that these practices really work to benefit the student. We must continue to be student focused.

We give our students midterm grade notifications to establish how they are progressing in the course and have one-on-one discussions about any problems or concerns. I also ask them often if they have any questions and we offer weekly tutoring sessions.
