respect

show respect to the student is very important for them, this form of continual attention does says alot about you

Hi Annette,
I can see this. My thought on this is it is truly how you say it and where you say it.
Patricia

I do not necessarily agree - "respect" as utilized in many urban populations can mean very different things. I have seen encounters where students felt "disrepected" simply because the Instructor let a student know there statement/actions/behavior/performance was subpar/unprofessional/or lacking. I think sometimes students confuse constructive critisim with disrespect.

I agree that it's not that simple. I don't think that it's a "if you respect me then I will respect you" kind of situation.

From Day 1 in the classroom, the instructor feels out the student wonders if he/she will respect the instructor. Over time if both sides earn it, respect for each other may happen.

But trust is a huge component of respect. If students loose trust in their instructor then loosing respect is not far behind.

Hi Jacky,
I solely believe that instructors should respect their students just as their students should respect them. Respect is something that is earned based on one's behavior/actions. Respect does not generally happen when it is demanded.

Respect is a two way street. It makes the teaching easier once you have established the rules of your class. Also,by teaching respect, you are helping students(especially young students)to do better in their career in the future,it might be very helpful during a job interview and get a good position.

Respect for my background gives me more leverage in my drawing classes. STudents have a better motivation as they feel they are getting help from someone with that professional experience they want to have after they graduate

I wish it were always that simple. I have had a couple students (blessedly not many!)that demand respect from everyone, but refuse to give it themselves. Weird.

Respect is everything. Give and you will get it back, what an easy concept!!

Hi Peter,
Yes! We must respect our students and in turn they will respect us.
Patricia

The old line of thought was: "Respect should be earned before it was given." In the culture and the classroom that we live in, it is now: "Respect is given first and earned or returned second." This seems to work in my interactions with my students. As on the first day of class, I express to them that the respect comes from me to them without any strings. They will be treated as adults. In return, a respectful environment will always be a priority even though things may be difficult and challenging. A respectful attitude and tone will help them to receive the most from the class.
