New Instructor Worries

There are many thigs that new instructors are concerned about and being respected is at the top of the list. Being able to establish themselves initially is necessary to have control in the classroom.

Hi Melissa,
I concur. You do get worries when teaching a course for the first time as well. I have found that being thoroughly prepared and knowing the subject matter well help minimize nervousness.

It is also the same when teaching a new subject. I have the jitters on the first day of class when I teach a new course even though I have been teaching for quite a while now. However, I found that I can find confidence if I take a few deep breaths; display good posture; express positive nonverbals; and project my voice appropriately. Also, it helps to smile and canvass the room. When a student has a question, I usually walk toward them to let them know I am truly genuine when listening. I repeat the statement to everyone to ensure they heard the message and at the same time clarify that I understood the statement correctly. This is active listening that builds rapport with students and is a great way to minimize the jitters.

Hi Sharon,
We all want to be respected. Respect is earned and not demanded. Carry yourself as a professional in every way, and your students will fully respect you.
