Building Rapport

One way I do that is to talk about a contemporary problem that is in the news...it gets the student to think about what they hear in the news and it also keeps me in tune with their mindset as I go forward.

Hi Osi,
How do you go about establishing a rapport with your students?
Patricia

i will certainly use this idea next time.

Hi Randy,
This is a great way to build relationships. I am sure students have grown to become friends from this exercise.
Patricia

I open the first day of each class with a "tell me your name, where your from and what sparked your interest in this field". I have students from 3 different levels in each class and it creates a rapport not only between the students and myself but among the new students and the returning students. They all seem to enjoy hearing of the many different ways each one became interested in the same field.

Hi Joseph,
Okay. I typically do a variety of things to build rapport, such as:
*Greeting the students
*Smiling
*Making small talk
*Complimenting the students
*Praising/Encouraging the students
*Calling the students by their name
*Welcoming a student who was absent back to the class
*Calling to check on absent students, etc.
