Student Respect

To get the respect from the students I first show them respect.
I start with day one by listening to what they have to say. Then, I try to relate their interests to the subject. This starts the day to day process of building a positive relationship with each student.

What good examples do you have on earning a student’s respect?

Hi John,
It will always serve well to everyone! You must first give respect in order to receive it. A lot of my students are older than I am, but I give respect to all.

I am with you Christopher, I come from a background whereupon one must render respect to recieve it. This approach has served me well with my students.

I agree that in order to get respect, you have to give it. By the 3rd day, I try to have every student's name and where they are from, as well as a little thing about their life. It helps develop a rapport with them that I do care and am not just there to collect a pay check.

Hi David,
I concur. I feel as though respect is something that is earned and not demanded. Students will show respect based on an instructor's professionalism.

Even professionals are human beings. Showing students, coworkers, peers that you are human, and honestly admitting to this is an excellent way to earn respect. When anyone I encounter has a 'holier than thou' vibe, I am disinclined to take what they have to bring to the table with any kind of validity. We must remember that in the end we too are humans, humans who make mistakes, humans who have feelings, emotions, just like the audience we may have who we hope respects us, and we them.

Hi Christopher,
I simply earn students respect by leading by example. I lead in every way as a professional.
