Classroom Control
I have learned that classroom control and respect by students and by the instructor are very closely linked.
Your suggestion of setting out a list is a good one.
Hi Angelia,
That's right! Grow a back bone and don't let them take advantage of you. You stay in control!

Patricia, you just said the majic words. Enforce the Rules. This can be one of the most challenging things that I have difficulty with. I become so exhausted somedays just trying to keep up with the dress code, cell phone usage, talking while I am talking and many other disrupting factors that can go on in the classroom. It seems to be the same students all of the time. I have started conducting students to prove a point and to hold the students accountable for their actions. They are adults in an adult world, they need to be respectful and act professional and if they can't do that then they need to be conducted to bring them back to reality and the reasons why they are here. To get an education.
Hi Stacy,
In a smaller class setting it is. In a larger class setting it can be really challenging, therefore it is essential to share established rules on Day 1 and make sure to enforce rules.
Patricia
I am very lucky in this area as my classes, so far, have been very small. It is easier to monitor student behavior and assess class participation.
Hi Annette,
Wow! You do a super job getting across to your students the "why" of each rule. From time to time I will have tardy students, an I generally have excellent classroom behavior as well. It is all in your presentation, firm yet pleasant.
Patricia
I agree! Why is it the very few students that ARE disrespectful are always the disruptive ones as well? Coming to class late, whispering during class. I tire of talking to the same students over and over again and the rest of the class get so annoyed by their disrespect. How do you NOT single them out, when they are always being disruptive and you have had one on one discussions with them laying out the expectations?
