I spend a great deal of time prepring for class. I like to have an agenda, but also some alternative activities in case my agenda moves too quickly, and class is not over yet. By being prepared, and having a "back up plan", I can go into class feeling confident and relaxed.
I agree. If you are not prepared for class, your anxiety is greatly increased and the students can see through that.
I believe to reduce one's anxiety one has to make sure that they know the subject matter by preparing prior to the class starting. Have all the necessary material ready for class and to arrive early for class.
Hi Reid,
It is good to turn the tables to the students from time to time. It is amazing what students can learn from each other. Students hear from us (instructors) all the time.

I was extreme nervous and anxious when I first began teaching. I reheased the material and notes for class multiple times. I also planned activities in class where I was not the focus but the students began the focus.
Hi Dragush,
Students want to hear about real life experiences. They get motivated by our stories. Whenever both the students and the instructor are comfortable, it really helps minimize anxiety.

Hi Patricia,
I am just simply real good at memorizing names. I do not do anything special to memorize names. Perhaps, you can utilize some of the posted ideas to help you.
Patricia
How do you memorize all the students name in the first class?
I believe things will go well if you are well prepared ,professional you know the subject and you are fully knowledgeable.Of course the presence of new students might bring you some time at the starting point ,when you can fill as you teaching for the first time. Myself I am very good on memorizing full name of each student in first hour of my class, and mentioning their names during my lecture it helps me to break the ice and create a very pleasant atmosphere for me and them at the same time.I also use my past experience in the lab (almost 15 years) as a very helpful tool to give them an overview about the programme and the skills they will gain during it.This way iI feel much comfortable and they start being exited about their future.
Hi Dellene,
Preparation is certainly key! Students can tell when you are unprepared.

Hi Magda,
If this works do it! I just make sure I am extremely organized, confident, and knowledgeable in the subject matter. I get to work 30 minutes ahead of time, but I do not get the luxury of alone time. My thoughts are being gathered in the shower, and as I drive to school.

Hi Tamarin,
Knowing this is your type of behavior, just make sure to be mindful of this in this particular situation.
Patricia
I have a hard time not talking fast when I feel like I am losing some students attention
I like to stay in my office alone at least 15 minutes before each class so I can be focused and gather my thoughts.
Being prepared is the best way not to be anxiety if you know what you are talking about it shows so be prepared!!
Hi Deborah,
You really have to be very confident to help minimize instructor anxiety. You use great practices to help with your anxiety.

Hi David,
Being well prepared is key! I like to make sure I have enough material to cover two days just in case I finish up early. Students should never be allowed to sit idle.
Patricia
Two things I like to do is to be very well prepared with more than enough teaching material and to open the class with an experiential exercise of some sort.
Being very organized and prepared helps with my pre-class nerves and anxiety. Also, I take deep breaths and visualize myself in the classroom being successful and well-respected.
Causing the students to panic will create anxiety amongst the students. Be firm, yet calming when introducing yourself and the material. I have found that this method works for me. Not to mention asking the students what they expect from me and the course.
