Are Teachers Bad Dressers?
When I was growing up, we always joked about how teachers were bad dressers. I have always remembered that and considered it important to look professional. For me, this always include wearing a tie.
From male and female perspectives, what do others think?
I think whether someone is a good dresser or a bad dresser is very subjective. Someone can wear business attire, such as a suit, giving the perception of "very professional," but the outfit or items they chose look completely unflattering on them. Then again, I am an instructor that has blue highlights in my hair.... Again, this is all subjective.
Hi Michael,
Absolutely! We should lead by example when it comes to appearance as well. We have to show students through our dress what professional dress means.

In many schools that provide technical instruction such as mechanics, a tie would be a safety hazard.
The school I work for has a dress code for staff members to provide a certainlevel of professionalism in the work place and for the students to emulate.
I dress to comply with the dress code standards and ensure that me uniforms are clean and neat in appearance.
Students are expected to be in compliance with the dress code, therefore we should set the standard and be in compliance as well.
Hi Norman,
I concur! Dressing the part helps you look the role of a professional. We should lead by example in our appearance as well.

I agree that it does not make you a better instructor. It does, however, help you to look more professional.
We have a "dress code" here that we aer supposed to adhere to, but being that this is an art and fashion school, many of the instructors forsake this dress code for more personal flair. I think the students like it, because I agree that the clothes do not make the man.
I am a female and take pride in how I look. I dont think a man needs to wear a tie but needs to maintain a professional look with wearing dress pants and a button down shirt. I wont respect them any less if a tie isnt worn. I can wear scrubs as I instruct in the medical field, but like to dress up. My students notice because if i'm not feeling well and wear scrubs they comment or if i'm not wearing heels they comment. Students are aware of how you look and i think they judge on appearance-to be honest we all do, it can be a school setting or out shopping
As a male instructor I feel wearing a tie does not make a better instructor. I even discuss the options of wearing a tie to the students.
I agree.I think that you should be prefessinal and look it too. I teach part time and Im a mechanic during the day. I change out of my uniform during the day job and wear a nice button up shirt in the evening. I see instructors come to class wear there dirty nasty cloths. That is not right at all.
I wear a lab coat all day so what I wear underneath usually can not be seen. I do wear closed toe shoes even in the summer months because it is expected of the students and they do not always comply. As an instructor I am there to set an example for professionalism. Also, I instruct the students to pull their hair up when in classes such as urinalysis and hematology for their safety so, on days when I'm in the lab with them I do the same. Lead by example.
I agree.... I wear scrubs at my College, so I just make sure that they are nicely ironed & in good shape.
Wearing a tie does not make one a better professor. Students do not take long to recognize a good professor from a bad professor - clothes do not usually impact a student as much as the professor's communication skills, fairness in the classroom, knowedge....
