Common Instructor Mistakes
Instructors often try to humanize themselves with their students to build rapport. This is not always the best idea because you can gain their respect by showing them your expertise.
Hi Tammy,
I agree! I do just the opposite. I let my students know on Day 1 that students generally get A's and B's in my class, mostly A's. You can immediately see the excitement in students.

I myself had an Instructor in College who stated "No one get and A in my Class" on the very first day of class. That is why I have never repeated that comment to any of my classes. As a student I felt that even though I have always done my best to get good grade. I would never be considered good enough in this instructor class. That can weigh very heavy on a young person mind.
I don't think there is anything wrong with trying to learn as much as you can in a class. The important thing is to make sure you learn enough about what is truly important to pass the class and to succedd when you get ut into the real world.
Hi Kevin,
I too have your over achievers, and I let them know exactly as you have done. I tell them I am going to give you want you need in great detail and briefly discuss everything else just for the exposure. we work on very tight time constraints in this industry.

I always have the one "over learner", who needs to learn every facet of every subject. I express to them that their passion is admonishable, but time constraints dictate that we touch on certain subjects and go in depth on others. They respond well to my approach.
Hi Benigno,
Absolutely! The best ways to gain respect of your students are to be knowledgable, fair, approachable, and professional; lead by example in short.
