Professional Image

I think that it's important that all instructors lead by example.

I strongly agree with this statement. I an instructor in the cosmetology field. If I don't look the part why should they. i take the time to get ready in the morning instead of in class or not at all. Sets a good example.

Hi Jayne,
Absolutely! We are some of our students only role model, and we should set the tone professionally.

I agree we should set example and lead with professionalism

Hi Sharmalan,
Absolutely! As instructors, we communicate with our students more than anyone else in the building. We should certainly lead by example.

the instructors are the main reason why the students paid money to join the program. Their teachings and their motivation are the ones that are going to change the students career and lives. It all comes down to the person who's conveying the knowledge. Therefore , these instructors are the one the students looks upon to. Therefore a professional image needs to be potrayed

Keeping a professional image is important. It separates you from the students. If I was to show up to class in some of the outfits my students had on, they would view me differently. Just a thought.

Hi Christopher,
You are a role model for your students. It goes to show that when they grow up, so to speak, they want to be just like you.

Hi Christine,
Appearance plays an important role to one's professional image as well as all the other components. Students judge our professionalism based on our dress, speech, actions, nonverbal gestures, etc. We have to watch ourselves at all times as professionals.

I enjoyed reading your post Charles! After becoming the program director of a medical laboratory technology program, I was asked to give a presentation of my accomplishments thus far to students. After my presentation, I had a few students email me and ask to have a one-on-one meeting to discuss their passion for pursuing the route that I went to get my PhD. This made me feel very appreciative that students are striving for excellence in helping others in the medical field.

I think that working in the field is super important and presenting yourself in this field as best as you can. I think dressing the part and looking the part-hiar, nails and makeup are incredibly important because we are working with the public.

I think that as long as you relate to the students and show them that it's possible to succeed they will respect you and not interpret it as bragging.

Hi Charles,
I agree! Students love it when we have stories that are applicable to the lesson/course! We need to always give students every reason to believe that we are qualified.

The students need to know that you have been successful in the feild that you are teaching. Some students will see this information as a goal for their future. This can also make students more comfortable while taking the class.

I like to share my professional successes with students, but I also share my mistakes. It helps students to realize that no one is perfect, no matter how long we have been in the field. If they remember my mistakes, they will be less likely to make the same ones when they are in the field.

Hi Alana,
Let students know of your successes. Sometimes it is okay to brag as long as we do not do it on a continuous basis. I am sure it will not be perceived as bragging, students will understand that you are successful and well qualified. Remember, it is not what you say but how you say it.

Personally it is sometimes hard for me to talk about my successes. It feel as if I'm bragging and I don't want to come off that way. However, I have noticed that if I make it known that I have succeeded in my field, the students can be confident that they will be recieving good instruction.

Hi LINKA,
Absolutely! Lead by example! Be the professional that you want your students to become.

When we sign on to be instructors, we are also mentors and role models for the students. So we have to act the part and look the part.

This is very true. You represent a professional in their field choice. If you look the part and set the same standards for them they will immulate you.
