Professionalism
Professionalism is a characteristic that we carry with us throughout careers.
Hi Scott,
I too lead by example, always, but I ensure that leadership with confidence. Sometimes students confuse confidence with arrogance. Let your students know on Day 1 the difference between confidence and arrogance, and use yourself as an example when explaining the two. Let them know you are not arrogant, you are just confident. Students need role models like us.

I always lead by example and sometimes it comes off wrong to the student. It seems as the harder I try the more I seem to offend students, as they reply that the instructor is arrogant or full of themselves. Sometimes it does not pay to "lead".
Hi Angela,
That's the saying! Lead by example!

I totally agree, Carolyn! After all, it is not just talking the talk, but walking the walk as well (that is the saying right? Ha!).
This is true in teaching as well as in our area of experience. Professionalism is as much an attitude as it is an action.
