remembering names

I believe students should remember each other names as well.

I agree it helps with group work especially in a shop.

My goal is by the 3rd class to know everyone's name. I share this with the students and they seem to appreciate the effort and it makes for an enjoyable rollcall - they all cheer when I can make it around the room correctly!

I also try to remember names by adding a nick name with there name ,I may not use it out load but it helps me remember.

I also have trouble remembering the names at the start of the class. I use same technique- repeat couple times in my mind. I have little more difficulty, when I have similar looking students. I do tell them that please do not mind if you catch me looking at you couple times in the class as I am trying to distinguish them and remember their names. I also call their names to take the roll call, that helps me to remember their names.

As my classes are mostly very large, its hard for me to remember everyone's name. I have them make a name card to place on their desks to help myself as well as each other to remember names.

Hi Melanie,
Everyone feels important when you can call them by name!

I agree. It shows respect and encourages student bonding.

Hi Joe,

People feel a sense of importance when they are known by their name.

i agree, the teacher as well as other students should now each other names. when you go work in small groups, its nice to know who you are working with

I try to know everyone's name by the second class, which is difficult with my large classes, but this exercise pays off throughout the quarter and beyond. This helps with classroom management, cuts down on tardiness, helps retention rates, and establishes a bond that has lasted for years with some students.

Hi Rose Anne,
Trying using name tents for the first two weeks to help with name memorization.

stating the students name 6 straight times (in my head) once they tell me their name helps me to remember their name better. This is a technique that I learned in sales training in another industry.

It takes me a long time to remember names especially with a large class. When I first started to teach in the MA program it helped when students sat in the same seat. It would be good if the students remembered each other but that only happens in small groups or with friends.

Hi China,
It is good for students to know each others names. It is one of the steps to bonding.
