Respect
Respect is a key factor to dealing with students. If they don't respect you, they will not listen to you no matter how much experience you have in the field.
Respect is earned, we must teach the students that is one of the key elements.
Hi Jiba,
Nicely stated! Students really tend to respect you, if you respect them.

I agree 100% with that statement, Patricia! In class as well as everyday life, when I interact with a student for the first time, there is a basic respect that I give them as a human being with their own unique thoughts and ideas while still establishing myself as the instructor (and expert in the field of study).
As our interaction progresses, I let them know that there are certain things that I expect from them, as well as they expect from me, to keep the level of respect not only constant, but also allowing for that respect to grow for both parties involved.
Hi Nicholas,
I concur! Respect should be mutual. The instructor should respect the student, and the student should respect the instructor. Contray to belief, respect is earned not demanded.
