Instructor Dress Code
Does anyone have any personal experience when different instructors have different interpretations of the school's dress code? ie- there is a difference in interpretation between instructors?
Does this affect the professionalism of the instructor?
Chris
Very true, anyone out of dress code should be sent home it's not fair to the rest of the student unless there is an emergency and the sudent could not get to the uniform. Providing this dose not happen alll the time too!
I too tend to overdress and early on at my current institution experimented with dressing to the institution standards like most of the other instructors. When I went back to slightly more professional dress (coat and tie every day) I noticed a definite increase in student respectfulness in discussions with me, so I continue to overdress.
Hi Jennifer,
I love your attitude! You are a true role model. You leave by example! Keep being a great educator!

In my opinion I like to do as I want my students to. If they are required to wear scrubs to class then I wear scrubs to class.
I so agree! I invested in some great pieces of clothing that I feel fabulous in! When I look great, I feel great - and those feelings translate or radiate, if you will, into everything I do while teaching...the ripple effect! I believe it helps me to teach great!
The school should have a dress code and all the teachers should follow. We get a reminder time to time what is the dress code. Once I asked if I can come in scrubs instead and it was fine with the college.
If i look good i feel good. My dress work clothing is like my superman cape it gives me power to save the word one student at a time.
i have run into that problem myself. My interpretation of the dress code was not the same as another instructors. I went to the faculty supervisor so as he could clarify the dress code to the two of us.
As an instructor, I tend to "over" dress. My school has a "business casual" dress code for instructors, which seems to have a wide range of interpretation sometimes. By dressing more professionally (perhaps more professionally than strictly required), I hope it reflects the fact that I care about my job and how I present myself to my classes. I think it also helps to distinguish me as the authority in the classroom.
I definitely think it is important to follow the dress code of the institution. My students are expected to follow the dress code or they have to go home. I must follow the same requirements of professionalism as I expect of them.
Hi Judith,
Absolutely! At my institution, my medical assisting instructors must dress in scrubs as the students do. Educators need to lead by example.

Hi Reece,
Instructors must adhere to the dress code. How can we expect students to adhere to policies, if we as instructors do not adhere to policies.
Patricia Scales
Hi Chris,
I teach a Medical Assistant class and our facility allows the instructors to either dress business casual or medical scrubs. I usually dress in scrubs (as the students also dress) as this is what will be the expected attire in their work world and it demonstrates that I am a part of the team.
I believe adherence to the facilities dress code is of utmost importance. it shows that communciation and adherence of the rules is accepted and acted on as a whole. once a teacher "does his/her own thing" questions can arrise if there are other instances where the teacher is also not adhering to.
Hi CHRISTINA,
The instructors should certainly all be on one page. If there are any discrepencies with the dress code, the DOE should be the one to make the call and share with everyone.
