respect
students need to be able to respect you and take you srious as a n instructor
I agree you want students to like you it would make things so much easier. I always remind myself and my instructors that we can be friendly but we are not friends. There is a difference. I also am a firm believer that respect can be earned in many ways as an instructor it is earned by being knowledgeable of the skill you are teaching. If you know what you are doing you show confidence and leadership...students will follow you. If you are unsure and it shows they will not trust or respect yoru ability to guide them.
I agree, respect of the class will make the instructor much more creditable with the class as a whole. We are not there to make friends but to teach the next generation of leaders.
Yes students do need to understand that there is a level of respect that should be maintained and that it is not negotiable. In return there need to be a level of respect given to the student and it should not be negotiable.
Instructors must show respect towards their students in order to receive respect.
Without respect and credibility, it is hard to maintain classroom management and control.
Yes, students will get the most out the class when the instructor has earned their respect. With new students, there is a small window at the beginning of each course in which you can make this happen. I believe a combination of firm rules, listening, and trust can accomplish this.
I struggled with this a little at the beginning. You always want everyone to like you. I have found that if I remain professional I will earn their respect which is by far more important.
Hi CAMILLE,
Yes, you are not there to win a popularity contest. If you are fair, professional, knowledgeable, and confident your students will respect you. It is nice to be liked, but it is not a necessity.

I completely agree that it is better for students to respect their instructor than to be liked as their instructor.
