Classroom Discipline and Policies
One of the greatest challenges in my current position is to anticpate what "policy" is to be followed for a particular problem or disruptive student. The policy changes based on who is handling it or what administrator the student complains too. The student know that if they complain to the rieght person, they will win. Does anyone else expereince these challenges?
Paula, difficult to be able to provide assistance without more specifics. What I am reading into your statement is your institution does not have a standard process of enforcing the policies of the institution? If this is the case then yes, you are in a difficult situation. You need to discuss with a supervisor or members of the administration to find out how they want you to enforce policies and procedures. For some institutions the role of the instructor is to be an enforcer while members of the administration have more latitude to interpret the rules. While this will seem unfair or inconsistent with instructors, if this is the intent of the administration then you are in alignment with their expectations of you and your role within the institution.
