Setting the Rules

It's very important to set your management style the first day of class. A properly prepared syllabus should detail the course expectations as well as the expectations of the students from you and you from them.

I totally agree. What you do on the first day sets the tone for your class for the rest of the year. Being straight forward with students and taking command of the class day one will set the atmosphere.

Vincent, the first day of any new group of students or any new subject matter can be critical in the overall success of achieving the learning objectives. Students need to know day 1 about the rules, policies and procedures of any instructor and any class. Students should also be fully engaged through discussions and two-way communication about the course objectives, policies, and procedures. The more focus that is placed on the day 1 engagement translates into a better experience for both student and instructor.
