The most important soft skills for success in any workplace is common sense and self-monitoring. It is important to get your work done and not be reliant on instructions from your bosses when you know what you need to do. The other one is self-monitoring. If you want to continue to be employed, it is important not to say everything that is on your mind. Many people are disgruntled in the workplace and are far to open about their distaste for their job. It is highly important to self-monitor and "fake" the enjoyment of your job, while seeking other opportunities.

The most important soft skill is EQ and empathy for others. The more you can understand where an employee is coming from, the better tools you will have to help them succeed.

Dora,
Right, not just good but great!

A positive attitude and good common sense is a great combination of the very important soft skills in the workplace. I am often lauded with the ability to do just that. I think it comes from my life experiences and the emotional intelligence people tend to develop when you deal with all the problems of llife. Our faculty and students are often young and inexperienced. Therefore, their emotional intelligence is limited.

Great customer service.

I believe they are all important as stated. I do believe it is hard to comply with all 10 at all times but if I can make myself aware of all of them and keep them in the front of my mind i believe
I can become a more effective insrtuctor. If I have to choose between them them though, integrity and a positive attitude are what I believe are best to display to my students. I want them to have these qualities when they reach the workplace as well as the hard skills I pass on to them.

I feel the most important soft skill is being able to connect with students and coworkers by taking the time to listen and getting to know each of them. Ask about their families and hobbies. Additionally, adding humor keeps conversations and lectures on a light note that encourages great attitudes and an environment conducive to learning. -Mike

i think it should be positive attitude

I think that common sense and reliabilty are also important

LeAnn,
Everything an instructor does helps to feed the class, positively or negatively.

Eric,
True, we always identify that and is probably still the one that everyone struggles with.

I believe that all soft skills are important but if I had to pick one would choose integrity over all. Is not worth collecting all other skills if we are not people with integrity, and more when we, as teachers, are example for our students.

I agree a positive attitude creates a great learning environment. Students learn more from a spirited instructor, who has a passion for not only their role but the content of the lesson.

That's true as well. We also allow former students to come in and address the class. We have found that students on extern provide the best testimonials.

Most important soft skill for success in the work place would have to be communication. I feel in the world of technology we lose some of that ability to communicate effectively.

Shelia,
Very true. One of the best things instructors can do is bring guest speakers in to speak to what actually happens in the workforce.
Philip Campbell

I believe having a positive attitude and the ability to communicate on any level is very important. Communication skills especially. So much can get lost in conversation simply due to the lack of being able to effectively make a point.More times than not, it's not the lack of words that is the problem, rather the inability to control the emotion put into a statement.

I agree with you wholeheartedly on using real world applications in the classroom. If we sugarcoat the lessons/skills, our students will be lost upon entering the worlforce.

I agree that if we could find a way to incorporate all the skills, we may be able to create a near-perfect learning environment. I oftentimes find myself focussing more energy in one area or another, depending on the personality types in the class.

I find that emotional immaturity is a common trait among my students. Role play has been effective in promoting the development of their soft skills.
