I teach a dental assisting program and I usually have dentists call me up for potential assistants for externship or hire. The biggest frustration they voice to me is being dependable and reliable. I have to think that dentistry is not too different from any other business. You can posses all the hard skills but if you are not present (on time) what good does it do!
in addition to having common sense and the ability to manage emottions, one need a bit of compassio and caring to be effective in the classroom.
Judy,
Thanks you for reaffirming that. It is important for us all.

The most important soft skill in a workplace or in life for that matter is maintaining a positive attitude.
Jessica ,
Listening is something all someone wants. The fact that you take a few minutes to do that is all someone needs sometimes.
Philip Campbell
I 100% believe that soft skill (People Skills) are very important. I think that being a good actived listener is very important and managing stress proplerly are two key skills to have to be a succussful person in life and in the work field.
Cynthia,
Attitudes are contagious. Keep yours positive and you and your students will benefit.
Philip Campbell
I feel a positive attitude is the most important soft skills for the success in the workplace. If my attitude is poor then my success out come will more then likely be poor from my students. Which makes common sense.
Kristen,
Communication can solve many issues before they become problems.

Ricky,
Everything positive is contagious. Keep up the good Work!

It is important to be able to accept other peoples point of view without being judgemental. Everyone has their own views of the best or right way of doing things. As long as we can get along and work together to achieve the goals of the company or project we will be successful in the workplace.
I feel the best soft skill is how to effectivly communicate with others.
Controlling your emotions and displaying a good positive attitude are very important to gaining the attention of todays learners. If you have a good attitude, most of the time it becomes contagious.
Kimberly,
Common Sense seems to be the one that most people point out, but also the hardest to teach.
Philip Campbell
Common Sense. Some people are very "book" smart, but that doesn't always help with situations that arise.
Charlin,
Good for you. You might be amazed at how quickly students pick up on that sort of thing.
Philip Campbell
Shelley,
Empathy is important and very hard to teach. What kind of things can we do in class to help demonstrate this to students.
Philip Campbell
This course made me realize how important my emotional state is to the mood of my class room.
I think one of the most important soft skills in teaching is empathy. Common sense, effective listening, good communication all follow behind. If there is no empathy for the student then the student will feel unwanted.
Soft-skills are made up of a variety of components, and I do talk about them individually, but avoid saying one component is more important than others. I think people must embrace all components to be successful on the job or in the classroom. Soft-skils get you hired and fired. Technical skill get a person an interview. I have never fired a person because they couldn't do the job. It was always because of a poor decision (soft-skills). I have also never given a student an "F" because he/she couldn't do the work. Again, it was because of poor soft-skills. In my opinion, soft-skills are everything.
