Cultural Diversity: Including Every Student --> The Diversity in "Diverse"

Post what you've learned about this topic and how you intend to apply it. Feel free to post questions and comments too.

Making assumptions about gender can really harm the educational process.

I will become more knowledgeable about my students interests and learning goals.

Until now I have learned being all human beings we have different characteristics, backgrounds and different preferences that make us unique beings and different from each person. For that reason, as educators we must focus on preparing our instruction not thinking of a certain group but of each student as a unique individual. For this it is important to get to know each student without going over the limits of respect. In this way we can focus our outcome in a more realistic way and also make holistic assessments that allow us to focus not only on the content of what is evaluated but also on the student who performs the evaluation.
I have also asserted that stereotypes are harmful in the educational process not only for the image of the instructor but for the emotional well-being of the student. We must take care of the language and the jokes that we want to introduce during the instruction time in order not to marginalize anyone or hurt susceptibilities.

Also I am more aware of the use of technology and how this can help us to teach in a more center person rather than a group center instruction.

Success as an instructor / teacher requires Differentiated Instruction,Differentiated Content and Differentiated Assessment.  Implementation of DI, DC, & DA can provide diverse learning methods to include cultural, generational and gender instructional planning.

Learning involves accomodating different cultures, methods, activities, and techniques as we all learn in different ways, but contribute to everyones expiriences/learning.

Each learner is different and intentional planning is necessary in order to include ALL students.

Each student is unique and should be treated as a unique person keeping in mind diversity

To understand that each individual is unique, and recognize the differences.

Schema are important because each person thinks, perceives, and understands through their own specific schema.

An important fact was that people stereotype because "it's easy" however, making assumptions and stereotyping diminishes character and can be harmful to a student's success.

i realized that i have been guilty of gender jokes and will refocus my efforts to be more inclusive and not marginalize for the "laugh."

I feel language is very important. Gender-inclusive language sets a model for the community to follow.

I think that the more we seek to employ non-gendered vocabulary and terminology, the more inclusive our CTE classrooms become. I have noticed that many people are shifting away from terms like "ladies and gentlemen" to address groups and opting for the more universal "y'all" which not only mitigates the assumption of binary, but also provides with a more inclusive way to address diverse gender groups. A lot of the terminology in CTE curriculum is outdated in that regard, and it is important that teachers address and counter those stereotypical examples when they see them in the curriculum and in the classroom.

This is my personal experience in USA

Diversity is the key to success. Gender should not be an important factor for imparting knowledge and everyone should be trated as equal regardless of the gender orientation.

each student is anidividual

be more inclusive in pronouns when telling a story or relating an experience.  He/she/the nurse

I've definitely found using a more flexible model when it comes to teach a diverse classroom is beneficial. I've worked with many students of varying abilities and backgrounds, and being flexible and versatile is a necessity!
