Hygiene!!
I is of very importance that we stress to our students that they must at all times in a medical setting practice great hyigene at all times.
Donald, you are welcome. I am always looking for strategies that work and are simple to implement.

Professional dress code policy and procedure is so important for everyone to follow. First impressions are easy to make and hard to change. Great strategy that you have offered. Thank you.
Angela, I agree this is a critical awareness to create, but the way one approaches the topic can be a touchy one.

This is such an important topic that I did not even think about having to "teach" when I first started.. Well, that was not the case. We try to emphasize to our students the need to "look" professional and this includes how they smell. Bad breath and body odor can really be a huge obstacle for thier employment so we use this as a way to approach it in the class room. I like the idea of the team approach and will use this in my upcoming office class.
Angela, I agree that an instructor acts as the first role model of the profession to the students. That is a serious and critical job.

It is important that as instructors we are to exemplify our appearance of professioanlism to the students. As instructors we should serve as a role model not only in appearance, but in attitude, tone and gestures.
It is very important that student understand that they need good hygiene. They are going to be around alot of people when at clinicals.
It represents both you and your students,I make sure that my students look professional and encouraged them to do a self-assessment from time to time not just their appearance but emotional and mental preparedness on their day to day task as students.
James, this can have such positive results in the real world, it is important to stress this.

I agree, good hygiene is crucial in order to learn how to be a professional.
I teach my students that no matter what you are doing and before and after completing your procedure/testing/assesment, you should always perform proper hygiene to avoid contamination and the carrying of germs.
The way you present yourself now of days in very important, I stress each day to my student the hygiene is very important. In addition I have zero tolerant for tattoo and piercing in my class. Most medical facilities make there employee have their tattoo and piecing cover at all time. But we still have students test the instructor by not having their tattoo or piecing cover. Just the other day I saw a person send home from work because there tattoo was showing.
Christina, not everyone is aware of this.

Hygiene is SOO important, and some people understand and pick it up really quick, while others you have to sit there for hours and explain to them why their nails need to be shortened and why they need to be clean and why they can't wear a gallon of perfume.
Georgia, this is sometimes a hard thing for students to grasp if they are unaware of how they are perceived.

Michael, some smokers are unaware that the scent of cigarette smoke can be stronger than they think.

I agree that good hygiene is very iportant. This is one of the first topics I discuss with my students on the first day of clinical. Not only is this a mandatory requirement, I inform them that their appearance represents the school. It also reflects on their future as a professional.
We must stress to our students and staff that that we must at all time paractice higene. Smoker do not understand this
Sabine, we need to find a variety of ways to make this point stick with learners.
