Post it notes for Kinesiology classes with the muscles and also making songs out of the muscles and muscle groups. They never forget them!
i've used $100,000 pyramid. the winners would win a pizza party for the whole class on the last day of class.
I divide students into groups of 2-3. Give them 5-10 terms (depending on size of the class). They have to read the book for definition and then deliver them to class in complete lay terms using the white board and pens. As they speak out the definitions in their on words, I comment on the accuracy of their statements. The remaining class fellows are allowed to read the book and give their comments too.
I have my students make flash cards using word parts only. I divide the class into groups and then I give them words to create. For example, Electrocardiogram, they must use their cards to create the word then tell me what it means. They were really competitive and enjoyed the activity. They commented that this helped them break apart words to gain their meaning.
Kimberly, this is a step by step process that fosters thinking. Great!

For veterinary anatomical directional medical terms I have created a game where the students draw cards with the term on one side and the reverse side has a sentence utilizing the term. I divide the students into teams and they must devise another sentence utilizing the term.
I have another set of cards where they must demonstrate the term on our dog model.
This activity works well and keeps the students engaged. It also works well for the analytical students; as they can work in groups and are not made to be on "stage".
Lisa, thanks for considering some new approaches.

Innocent , it is great that it is student generated and facilitated.

I make students do round robin, I make them do live scenarios- where the student is injured and they need to take care of the student, but they have to you medical terminology when explained the CC or plan of action. I have tried Jeopardy before and I liked it. I saw some oher things the instructors ahve posted and I am now considering those
I have given group of students a topic to discuss and present to the class. They make a flashcard question game based on their presentation. Every student goes up and pick a question card and will have to answer the question on the card. The presenters grade them based on the answers they have for the question and I simple play a supervisory role to correct any mistakes in their answers. Its fun and the students love it.
Tammy, I like the stop and restart method described here. Thank you for sharing it.

Love the post it note idea! I will definitely initiate it. When my students work in the simulation lab, we stop our mock procedures when layman terms are used and the entire class is invited to "restart" the procedure by using correct medical terminology.
Tina, I really like this visual and active approach.

We have played jeopardy in the past. We can play individually or in teams.
I have the order of blood flow cut into separate parts and laminated. I have 2 sets of them. The students are placed into 2 teams and when I say start the first student puts the first step on the board. Then the next student in line puts up the next step. if the step is wrong the next person can only take it down. Then the next student can put up the correct one. The first team to put the order up right wins. Then i will do it again only starting from somewhere different in the blood flow to challenge them. They seem to love it. Ialso do it with the pulmmonary and systemic circuit
I have used Jepordy, Wheel of Fortune, and anything that student think will help them learn their terms. I always make them get involved by making the questions, then I check them to make sure the questions are relevent. Everyone has to participate or they will receive questions from Me.
Julie, I like this idea, also. Thanks for sharing it with us.

My students are writing a systems research paper. Each student selected a different body system. Throughout the class I have assigned homework r/t the systems i.e. write 5 sentences using medical terminology associated w/the body system you are researching and write 5 questions r/t your body system. The students interpreted each others sentences. I am using some of the students' questions as test questions.
