Interactive boards allow you to not only edit or add to pictures or diagrams to further illustrate your point, but also to utilize a students' editions or additions to that same graphic. They may have a better or simply different point of view that the other learners might be able to grasp more simply. When using their work in a positive light it will build their confidence to participate in the discussions that go along with the use of the board and hopefully will get the students who are more apprehensive to begin or increase their participation.
as technology chainges with the industry, it becomes more and more important for the students to be able to keep up with the chainges. the use of computers is a must to be able to work on todays heavy trucks. we are going to chainge to a new cirriculum here at this campus and it will include new computers at every table in the classroom and now we have a room with almost one hundred computers in it for the students to use. the entire class is going to be computer based. the lecture time will be somewhat shorter every day.
James,
So your challenge is not using technology but finding ways in which it can actually mediate and facilitate the learning process - any ideas on that?
Dr. Ruth Reynard
we have engines and computers that the students can work with here at the school. everything in this industry has moved to computers and the control they have on transportation. the students have to use them to diagnose the problems with the training aids, this keeps them involved with each manufactures usage of the computer.
James,
Do you have examples of how you use this technology to engage students? Do you also use the technolgy to capture and distribute the learning moments?
Dr. Ruth Reynard
It gets all the students involved in the lesson. All the students can us the board for interaction with the lesson
Tammy,
So good to hear! I would love if you could visit my teacher exchange in the Faculty Lounge and provide more examples of how this technology helps your students.
Dr. Ruth Reynard
My students love the interactive white board. They are engaged and participate. I use it with PowerPoint, games, and just to write on a blank screen. The students love it!
Using a white board enables all students to view the same infoemation at the same time. This, along with questions on the subject matter will enable students to add their points of view and understanding to the deliberation. The group learning project adds to the base of the overall education.
When holding discussions with the students and everyone has a tablet or pc to work with it makes it easy to send and recieve links to and from the board. For example... if a student is looking at a photo or diagram on his pc or tablet he can simply send it to the board and everyone else can see what he is discussing and asking questions about.
jon,
I believe you can contact any vendor directly and ask for a demo of the technology at your institution. Perhpas other faculty would be interested in this kind of demonstration as well.
Dr. Ruth Reynard
i agree with brian i would like to see a interactive be foe i can coment
Joe,
Very true. Understanding and learning from lectures requires skills that we do not develop in our students these days. Most students would prefer engaging with and interacting with the content.
Dr. Ruth Reynard
Sitting back and just listening to a lecture nowadays is just lame. The students want to participate, ask questions, challenge facts sited in the lecture. As a teacher it all sounds good to me...at least they are interested in the subject matter.
Interactive boards provide an opportunity to collaborate on the development of various content and promote involvement. Maximizing technology to capture student comments, and ideas, then distributing that to the group means that thinking is not confined to one learning space or group.
Terri,
Interactive white boards can be used both synchronously and asynchronously - on a fully online course this can be achieved as well...virtually. Now with phone apps, some of the capture and distribution can be achieved - but within a f2f environment, the interactive white board brings an enhanced interaction and collaboration. Hybrid can use all of these ...
Dr. Ruth Reynard
Whiteboards are not an experience this instructor has utilized in the classroom. Syllabus requirements with term and class hour constraints mean we have not ventured there. The classes are not hybrid.
We do utilize the Internet to bring real life/world experience to prepare students for the “biz.†In their chosen field, they may find themselves half a world away from the home office. Use of MMC to communicate is essential. They must be comfortable using the apps and also aware of how to direct the information needed. To lose a transmission due to unclear subject information or using multiple transmissions for one subject is costly to the company. (We are not referring to screen break issues.) Messages cannot fall through the cracks. This would result in a loss of profitability.
We digress. We are open to suggestions for whiteboard in a “jam packed†course.
It allows each student to contribute to the learning process. I could imagine using this to brainstorm ideas for investingation evidence -- building an outline. Addionally, during a demonstration of software, I could ask a student to highlight or point out the data that is important to solving the case. Lastly, I believe an interactive review of a student's project could be quite beneficial, particularly through the highlighting and walkthrough of an impressive report.
Michael,
Have you used the new doc scan apps on the IPhone or IPad? These essentailly also captures afterwards...
Dr. Ruth Reynard
by using an interactive white board, it allows me to capture live feedback from my students and really requires them to become more involved. It is also a great way for me to archive information and key points for student access later as either review of material or perhaps to make up a missed class session. While using interactive whiteboards both in live chats and on-ground components of the course are effective, I think that the whiteboard coupled with individual tablets really makes a great deal of sense as it will give students immediate access to the discussion that is going on in the classroom.
