Alfretta,
Well said. You provide them with expectations and then they way to obtain them. I agree with you.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
The two most important things to consider when establishing a pattern of teaching are communication and assignment submission.
I have notice that a few of my students don't understand that they must submit their assignments on time. There is no late assignments and no excuses. For some odd reason they think they can make up assignments at the end of the course like previous instructors allowed them to.
I did clearly communicate on the first day of class what is expected of them with the assignments and due dates.
consistency
clearly stated objectives
Clearly identify class expectations
Discuss your teaching style with students
I think when establishing a teaching pattern it is important to consider who the learners are and what they need to be successful. Some learners need more support and guidance then others so the methodology used and patterns set up need to reflect those needs. Secondly you need to know your environment well, especially in an online situation. Knowing all the tools available and what they are best suited for allows the instructor to use them most effectively in designing a teaching pattern.
Holly, even with examples, I find that the students sometimes feel left out and as if they are the only ones who feel that way. I have talked to many who have told me that. I find that if I talk to them on the phone, they feel more connected.
1. Being consistent in responding to discussion questions
2. Consistently offering substantive feedback to students when they submit assignments.

1. Clearly establishing the fact that the student can trust you.
2. Being consistent with grading and supplying information on a consistent basis or time frame.

When establishing a pattern of teaching, in my opinion two of the most important things to consider are expectations and guidelines. The expectations should tell students what is expected from them as students and what the students can expect from the instructor during the course.
Guidelines are important because they should provide a means of communication for how the classroom is run by informing students of such things as assignment due dates, how to submit assignments, classroom policies such as late assignment submittals, etc.

Dori,
What role does content delivery have to establishing a teaching pattern?
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Michael,
I like what you said! We don't talk about the interconnectedness of all of the online elements.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Dr. Cheryl,
Well said, there is more to the communication that say communication. Communication takes many forms.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Roy,
How does delivery establish teaching pattern? Are you talking about learning styles?
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Tony,
Yes, feedback that is timely and meaningful is a must if the course is both online and accelerated.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
When establishing a pattern of teaching I think the two most important things to consider are:
1. Communication;
2. Content delivery.
I believe that when establishing a teaching pattern, the most important things are:
*Establishing intuitive links between educational units. By doing so, students will begin to see the interconnected nature of assignments, thus motivating them further.
*Being consistent. By using the same pattern, students (and staff) will be more comfortable, which will promote learning all the more.
I think to two most important components of teaching are learning outcomes and communication. Effective teaching is ensuring that your student learned, understood, and can apply all of the objectives of the course. The expectations, objectives, goals, and assessments must be clearly communicated. In addition, the instructor must be available for questions and concerns.
When establishing a pattern of teaching, I beleive the two most important things to consider are communication and content delivery. Communciation is essential to facilatating a classroom and content delivery is essential to the students mode of learning.
Thanks,
Roy Hawkins
I think that in my rule-driven discipline that
a sound teaching pattern within an accelerated course format must involve:
1) Organization of the course -so that students quickly understand the expectations and process, and
2) Timely feedback for assignments (grades), responses to questions, discussion boards and other communications needed for learning to progress.
Anne,
yes, don't you think that should also apply to students? Just thinking. . . .
