Asynchronous V. Synchronous

It seems to me that a synchronous environment in the online setting may be beneficial. This might help reduce procrastination and provide a more "classroom" like environment for students. However, this sort of seems like it would defeat the purpose of online courses? Where is the happy medium?

Mark,

Don't you think your experiences as an online student makes you a better online instructor. I hope you share your experiences with your students.

I'm not sure I have a preference here. I've participated in both, both as a student and instructor. From an instructional standpoint, I prefer synchronous to asynchronous and it is easier to organize, track, and execute - for me at least.

However, as a student, I prefer the asynchronous methodologies as I like to work at my pace and cater to my pace and experience.

Raeven,

You have found the big dilemma. Many programs require a synchronous component. It is interesting to hear comments from instructors. Many feel students don't show up for the synchronous sessions unless they are required or for points. others will tell you they have more students watching the recording. Is it worth the instructors' time; that is my concern.
