Steve,

Yes and what the instructor expects the students to learn is directly connected to the learning outcomes. You do then have to carefully consider how to assess those learning outcomes. Thanks for your input.

When authoring an online course I believe the 3 most important things to consider are: 1. Consider what it is the instructor expects the student to learn. 2. Consider how to design the course so that it keeps the learner engaged. 3. Consider how you are going to assess students to see if they met the course learning objectives.

Juliet,

Excellent! The tools you mention in #3 help students achieve the objectives. Nice job.

Gary,

All great things to think about when doing anything with an online course. Any tips on keeping it interesting and fun? We can always use new ideas.

1. The objectives of the course= what I want my students to learn
2. The best ways to accomplish #1
3. What tools I have in which to deliver content

David,

Absolutely - the audience, the students, are the first thing we should think about. Communication and consistency are also key factors. Thanks for your input.

1. Ease of navigation
2. Making sure the content has a clear objective to motivate students
3. Keeping it interesting and FUN!

There are several things that should be considered. First, you have to know your audience well. Designing courses without considering your audience isn't going to give you a very effective product. Second, consistency is key. Making sure you have a consistent course helps keep your students on track throughout the term. They learn how to navigate and what to expect in the first week and it carries over throughout the rest of the course. Third, I would make sure that I had reasonable expectations of my students. This also leads back to knowing your audience.

Amy,

Yes, we do have to figure out where the students are "coming from" with their knowledge and help move them forward. Many do not the differences between the traditional and non-traditional students. Thanks!

John,

Right on. You definitely have to consider the objective carefully and connect them to the learning process. Thanks for the input in this forum.

When authoring an online course I take into consideration what do the students already know, and what do they need to know. I also take into consideration the level of the student at the present time. Many of my students are " non-traditional students that do not have the necessary basic skill set that most other students have. This will help me to determine how I will deliver the material, and through what media.

As others have stated, I would need to focus on what future students already know and what they already can do (their background). I also believe the course learning objectives and learning outcomes must be developed and they must be student-centered. And I would have to consider how the course content can be best presented to students to meet their needs and to allow for their different learning styles.

Lisa,

Thanks for the additional post. I teach business communication some semesters and I totally understand the evaluation process of papers and time it takes. Thanks again.

Yes. I teach composition and we work through the writing process by brainstorming, outlining, then drafting, revising and editing. I also allow for revisions and thesis workshops.

Dr. Naomi,

Right on! I haven't heard the team TCO, but understand completed. Thanks for your input and happy Thanksgiving to you as well.

Hello Dr. Crews,

The three most important things to consider when authoring an online course is as follows:

1. What do the students need to know via my Course Expectations?

2. What are the Terminal Course Objectives (TCO’s) and how will they be delivered?

3. How will the students be accessed in learning the content via tests, quizzes, etc.?

Happy Thanksgiving!

Lisa,

Is your class a writing class? What do you do to help students work through the writing process?

Thanks!

1. Course outcomes
2. Real world application.
3. Working through the writing process

Eric,

Simple is good sometimes. We do have to think carefully about the skills we want the students to achieve and think about how we want to get them to a higher skill level. Thanks!

Three important things to consider when designing a course to be delivered online:

1) What skills should the student be able to demonstrate by the end of the course.

2) How will competence with those skills be determined and evaluated.

3) How will the necessary information to meet the course goals be delivered to the student.

A little simplistic, but it's general enough to fit almost any material.
