Setting the tone with video welcome
I start my courses with a short video clip offering a hello, a bit about myself and end it with my dogs and daughter and stating how much I love online learning. I think this puts a "real" person into the setting. I follow-up with a note to each student and give my cell number in that note. It makes them feel they are able to reach me any time they need me. If that becomes abused I simply address it at that point. To this time I have only had one or two student who called far too much....

Jonida,
I like video components. I think in general when students see and hear you in a video, even if it is not live, they feel a deeper connection with you and the course. That same connection just doesn't seem as deep through e-mail or other text tools.

Debbie,
This is great idea. I usually introduce myself during our first live chat meeting but having a separate welcome video is even better. I will start implementing this coming session.
Debbie,
I like the video clip. It does bring a real face and a real person to the course. At times I believe students think we are not real people...not sure what we are. I have given out my cell number, but I am hesitant to do so. With SmartPhones I prefer to use email or other communication option. Then I can control when I respond. I have only had one student abuse it this semester calling all the time when the information was clearly posted. In my opinion, teachers need a break period and boundaries too. It is good for students to understand that as well. That doesn't mean you are not still "responsive"
