Rubric Role

What do you think is the role of a rubric?

"Consistency is the beginning of quality." This statement is found in "Quality Assurance" plans. The notion that we can and must "measure accurately" is one of the bases of science. In education, each course must have clearly stated outcomes/expectations and must have a measure for each. The more specific the rubric, the more likely to have a consistent measurement of ALL students' contributions and outcomes. Rubrics help to remove the instructors' personal bias (and even the fact that the instructor is having a bad day and is fighting a grading deadline) and evaluate the students' performance in a fair and consistent way. Rubrics are not perfect; nothing is. Rubrics are our best hope for both the instructor and the student knowing the expected outcomes and what will constitute high and low performance.

Hi everyone! I love rubrics for grading. It seems as though they making grading easier and they help me be more consistent. For students, they help to clarify expectations for an assignment and the understand the feedback and grade. A rubric allows the student to see what they did well (and where they can improve).

I think that role of rubric is to provide students with a guideline of course grading. More important it is used as a means of providing rules that inform the student when a particular assignment is due and what the instructors expectations are when evaluating their work.

Cheryl and Dr. Molnar,

Thanks for continuing the conversation about rubrics. We appreciate your input.

Mary,

Clarity is what it is all about. Remembering that rubrics are essential for students and instructor is a key part of creating effective rubrics. Thanks for your input.

Sharon,

You are right on track. Rubrics are essential for students and instructor. Thanks for your input.

Scott,

Right on! Remembering that rubrics are essential for students and instructor is a key part of embracing them. Thanks for your input.

Craig,

And, think about how the rubrics help the online instructor as well. They are not just for students. Thanks!

Lindsey,

AND, they are great for online instructors as well. Don't you think so too?

Kathleen,

AND, don't forget how the rubric helps the instructor as well. A tool that helps all!

I guess the role of the rubric would be to keep track of the progress of the student.

The role of a rubric is to guide student learning. It lays out the expectations that the teacher has for the assignment and it gives the student the step by step things that the teacher is looking for in the assignment. By posting a rubric early on in a course, it can lower the frustration level because students are aware of what the teacher is looking for. Rubrics, in that way, assist both the student and teacher by eliminating expectation surprises.

The role of the rubric is actually critical to student success. The rubric should be designed to provide the student with the exact expectations of each assignments - somewhat of a checklist to ensure that all requirements have been met.

The rubric also helps the student to understand how the points are calculated and how much each part of an assignment is worth. If rubrics are followed carefully, the student should be able to achieve a high level of proficiency with each assignment.

The role of the rubric is a guide to the student of the expectations of the discussion. A rubric breaks down the components of the discussion expectations and allows the student to see what is required to meet the maximum satisfaction of the rubric by systematically following the instructions of the rubric. The rubric also makes the evaluation process more clear to students, thus reducing the time to grade by the instructor.

Pam,

Excellent input. It is so important that you use the rubric for project development and assessment. Nice job.

I can not teach without a rubric. It helps to develop guidelines for the students to follow. It also helps me to be more consistent between student when grading.

An assignment and discussion rubric serve several purposes. A rubric can give the instructor guidance in grading assignments. This will lead to consistency in grading. In addition, a rubric communicates to student what the assignment expectations are. Any questions that students may have would be addressed to the instructor prior to the assignment completion.

In my opinion, rubrics are great for students. They let students know what is expected of them for each assignment/project from the initiation to the completion of each. The rubrics should aid in showing students what the importance of each assignments is, such as learning a specific skill.

I agree with Dr. Molnar's response. The students understand what my expectations are for the assignment and it places the students on an even playing field when grading their assignments.
