Sheila,
You make a great point. It is personal and relevant to each student and they have to apply their new knowledge and/or skill to those personal actions. It also makes them critically evaluate their own work. That is such an important skill.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Authentic assessment works well during practicum. Students will perform hands-on tasks such as filing medical records demonstrating their knowledge of terminal digit filing.
Antonio,
Create your discussion then create a rubric by which you will assess them on that applying of knowledge (if that is part of your assessed objectives) That would work for you.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
I have used portfolio development in my course. This allows students to develop work they can use for future employment. It is personal and relevant to each student.
At this time, I have not used authentic assessments. The closest it gets in when I mix my years of computer expertise with the weekly discussion postings. I always want some kind of an example, but now I see it would be very beneficial to re-word it and give them a scenario and see where they go with their new found knowledge. I have done something similar, but not enough. I can see now how beneficial this method could be.
Jonida
I think you will be surprised regarding your students work. It is a great way to relate learning to the real world.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
That is something we have not used in our classrooms. Based in this class it would be very beneficial
Alice,
You make a great point. When we really begin to analyze our assessment plans within a course we learn what we do and what we don't do. It is more than just info for a student grade; it is information that reflex our teaching.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
That is a good question....it took me a while to really know where this is in my course...It is in the discussion boards. Here is where my students record most of their observations and where I observe a lot from them. Her is where I can see who is going to be successful with the class information and who may need some extra assistance from tutoring, the Writing Center, etc.
The students responses to their fellow students gives a solid peek at this information also. I have often wondered if the discussion board was a waste of time..I can see know, it is not!! Thanks for opening my eyes!
Eric ,
That is really interesting. Does this mean each student has demo as part of the portfolio.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
I think I jumped the gun here, as in the last forum, I used our inclusion of a student portfolio in our program as an example of subjective assessment. It certainly is that. However, after completing this part of the course, a student portfolio can also be considered an authentic assessment.
For our core program, the creation of a student "Demo" is required for completion of the course. It will also likely be that demo (which displays learned real-world, job required skills) that will hopefully lead to the student's entry-level employment in electronic media.
Kurt,
How do you assess them? Do you use a rubric. Do other students get to see other students' portfolios?
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
The most common way I've used authentic assessment is through portfolios. In some of the schools I teach for, a portfolio is required. Students like this because they not only are able to build a set of representational materials for later display to potential employers, but they also enjoy showing what they are able to do based on what they have learned. It gives me a great opportunity to see what they can do when freed from the restriction of specific classroom assignments.
Kurt
Sharon,
Yes it certainly does! How many times have you seen students learn new terms but not recognizing those terms in other contexts.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Aaron,
That is a great idea. Don't you see your students implementing the knowledge and skills they have just learned in a real life scenario? That is great assessment and they will use it later.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Hello,
It seems that coding real-world situations would fall in to authentic assessments. It can be hard to do and yet it is something they can relate to as it is something they will see in their job.
Sharon
I use authentic assessment when asking students to talk about certain "real life" situations that relate to the curriculum for the assessment at hand.
Steve,
What a great assessment. How do they assess it? I see they hold the student to industry standard, do they use a rubric?
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Our school teaches media arts. One authentic assessment is a scripting assignment whereby students not only write a news story, the must compose related visual information and format to industry standards.
Twyla ,
That may be the way the program is designed and that is fine. Not every course lends itself to authentic assessment; but you hope they can take that information and build on it from other courses.
