I agree with you. The rubric is helpful to get the most from the student.

George,

You are correct. And, don't forget the rubrics are helpful to students as well. Thanks for your input.

The advantages of using rubrics in online classrooms provide for a faster grading process and also a streamlined process. The rubrics allow for us as instructors to be guided and analyze the student's submissions accurately.

Sabrina,

Any time we can help students improve, it's worth the effort. The feedback is excellent and it's great to see students appreciating the feedback. Thanks!

One of the great advantages for using an Analytic Rubric is that students’ can improve on their weekly assignments/tests. When I deduct points due to essay content and/or missing cited reference, I provide extensive feedback to students’ on how he/she can improve on writing essays and including cited references. By me providing a solution to the problem, students’ are apt to utilize the resources that I share with them. Students' assignments and tests grade increases each week. Many students' thank me for providing extensive feedback.

Tom,

Thanks for your input. We do want to be at our best when we are assessing our students and a good rubric helps us do that.

Using rubrics in my courses enables me to:
save time when grading,
be consistent,
be objective when assessing students' learning,
provide succinct formative feedback,
to know areas that I should focus on based on the student scores for each learning activity.

Albert,

The focus the rubrics provide is a key advantage. It helps the students and instructors both focus so we are all on the "same page." Nice job.

Using rubrics provides several advantages. Those advantages include: more focused instructional activities, specific explict guidelines for the students, student's better understanding of their instructor's expectations.

Rubrics also help provide consistent grading over time and by multiple instructors because they break the evaluation into more reproducable components.

Carla,

Many people make the mistake of making the rubrics too limiting, but you can actually have a category for creativity and other components to allow the students to be creative. Good question.

Carla,

The rubrics have to be clear to help students understand the expectations. Without this understanding, they cannot reach the objectives. Thanks!

Carla,

The key words you used are "soundly constructed." This is essential and it's important to make sure the criteria are well-written to ensure this construction. Thanks!

Edward ,

Keep in mind that checklists are not always rubrics. Rubrics have criteria at various levels to demonstrate competence. Sometimes checklists are simply designed to check off whether things have been accomplished, but not to a certain degree of competence. Thanks for your posting.

Clarity-studnets are able to ue the jargon correctly to communicate with the instructor when asking questions.

Does anyone think rubrics limit creativity?

Exellent comment-I have found students respond quite well to a rubric that has been soundly constructed, It seems to answer all of their questions, or at the very least, give them a foundation for asking the question.

In many ways, health occupations have been using rubrics for many years, but didn't know it. I'm thinking about procedural checkoffs.

When I have tried to design some for my classes, I've found out, via this course, that 1) one size does not fit all and 2) keep the score variables precise, i.e. don't use ranges.

I know I'm gonna keep coming back to this site as time goes on

James ,

Mutually understand is the key phrase you used. We all need to be "one the same page" when it comes to assignments, expectations and evaluation. Thanks!

I believe there are two main advantages. One is to break down the learning experience so students and instructors mutually understand what needs work and the other is to clearly identify expectations at the outset of the assignment.

Roshawna,

And, don't forget, rubrics help the instructors as well. It is nice to have a tool that helps everyone.

Thanks!
