Sherrilyn,

Yes. You are right on track. Thanks for your input.

Darren,

And, it helps the instructor be consistent in their assessment. Thanks for your input.

Laurie, initially when you set up your rubrics did you find that it was quite time consuming? Do you have any pointers on how to expedite setting rubrics up? Thanks for sharing.

The advantages of a Rubric is to share what the benchmarks the assignments or work will be evaluated. It allows the students to know the difference between what needs to be improved and good work that has been performed. It provides students advance assistance in working towards another or the next assignment(s). Therefore, allowing the student an opportunity to prepare for excellence. Rubric assists in sustaining a stability for accessing and achieving higher grades in the present as well as in the future. This could be the difference in receiving a grade C versus an A. Rubrics can be beneficial in improving the self assessments skills for students. It gives feedback and involves the students.

Hello Learners,

As an online instructor it is important to have a plan and always provide learners with a clear path for achieving goals. When students have a clear plan there is more opportunities for success.

Aside from providing students with a clear expectation, rubrics provide grading consistency. Students can feel that you are grading the same across the board and not “favoring” one student over the other.

The advantages of rubrics are that it gives the student information on what is expected and helps them do better work. Knowing what is expected allows them to prepare the assignment with the knowledge of what the teacher is looking for.

Stephen and Francis,

I agree. The rubrics are so beneficial tithe students and instructors. Thanks.

Stephen,

Yes, the rubrics should show students how to improve. Nice job.

Francis ~

I find that students, especially ones that are new to the instructor, appreciate having a rubric because they know exactly what is expected of the instructor.

Steve

I find that using analytic rubrics not only provide the student with the reason that they received a certain grade, but also teaches them about improvements, e.g., punctuation, word choice, grammar, etc. It is a teaching tool, not just a grading tool. I've found that most students appreciate the use of a analytic grading rubric because it gives them a clear understanding of how they arrived at the grade and how they can improve, if necessary. It eliminates ambiguity and only helps students achieve the grade they would like to achieve.

Kimberly,

Yes, it is true they have to read it to benefit. Ha! Encouraging self- and peer-assessment using the rubric is helpful. Thanks for your input.

One of the most beneficial components of the rubric, in my opinion, is how it breaks out, in detail the expectations of the students.

I think this is significantly important for those of us who primarily work with non-traditional students. It lets them know exactly what is requiured. There is a lot of uncertainty and anxiety for adult learners who have not been in an academic environment for some time, this can provide a little relief by defining expectations up front.

Of course, they have to actually read it to benefit. :)

Rachelle and William,

Thanks for continuing the conversation. You both bring up good points and provided great information to share. Thanks.

Rachelle,

I also find the more specific the criteria in the rubric and how they are clearly aligned with the outcomes the better. Thanks for you input.
.

William:

I find the Rubric helps to provide a foundation for the feedback that I provide to my students. I provide detailed written feedback to all my students explaining what was good about their assignment and what needs improvement. The Rubric provides detail on exactly where they lost points. This helps the student to understand what needs to be worked on. I find this helps with questions and confusion.

Rachelle

Laurie:

I agree, Rubrics take the guess work out of grading. I know exactly how I am grading and so do the students. I also find that providing the Rubric along with the assignment helps students know exactly what they will be assessed on and what is required. Some of my classes have Rubrics however I often create mine own to make sure it is directly related to the assignment. I find the more specific a Rubric is the better.

Rachelle

Michael,

I like that you help students understand where they need improvement and how your feedback on one rubric can lead to improvement on the next assignment. Nice job.

I agree that giving students specific feedback in areas in which they did well and areas in need of improvement helps, and I think it helps at different stages of learning. Specific, clear expectations help students (especially anxious ones) know where to focus their efforts at the beginning of a project. After the project is graded they help the student understand how well he or she performed on certain elements of the assignment. And on the next project the student has the opportunity to focus specifically on improving areas he or she needs to improve.

Charles,

Consistency from the instructor's point of view and understanding expectations from the students' perspective. Thanks.
