The importance of goal setting
I really believe that it is important to set goals. When you set goal it give you something to work towards and when you achieve your goals it should be treated as an accomplishment. Without setting goals I have no drive or motivation to complete some of my tasks, but when I set goals and have a time frame I know that they have to be completed by a certain time.
Great ideas Nancy. I also encourage all of us to develop long-term or big goals & then shorter-term or smaller goals. However, our smaller goals should tie into our larger goals.

I always set goals for myself everyday, at work and at home. I believe that it is important to get whatever needs to be done, done. I also feel that when we write it down we feel the need to do it and when we get to cross it off of our "list" we feel good about accomplishing the goal. I also feel that we need to always go back and readjust if necessary.
After all our objective should be improving learning and teaching techniques, maximizing all resources, and providing a sense of success for all students.
Tena,
Great application of the goal setting process to the classroom. When we can help our students with this process I think we provide great assistance.

As defined in the study, goal setting is a formal process during which you define targets that you plan to achieve. When anyone set goals, you commit to outcomes that will be accomplished personally or through your team. Goal setting also creates a long and short term vision and gives motivation. As an instructor at a local college, setting goals at the beginning of the term puts the vision of passing the class in motion. After all each student should have the same goal set and motivated toward passing with the highest grade each student can obtain. By achieving the goal set it gives each person a sense of accomplishment.
Exactly, we need to put a date on these goals. Make it reasonable & doable, but set a date.

These are great comments and I'd like to add that if there is an open ended date in which to accomplish these goals, more often than not, the goal will not come to fruition.
Setting goals is probably one of the most important things someone can do if they want to complete a task. If you want to get something done...you must set a goal. If you have a vision in mind....you must set a goal and write it down. I believe the reason people don't set goals is so they don't let themselves down....if they don't set the goal in the first place, they they won't have to meet the goal....End of story. It's almost like the self fulfilling prophecy. "I won't do it or think about it if I don't have a goal in mind." That's why I beleive the most important part of motivating yourself into action is setting the goal.
This is great & all of us are motivated by goals to some extent. It is important to remember that not everyone is as motivated by goals as others so don't let this be your "1 tool" for motivating the team.
