At What point does an Alumni become an agent?

If an institution were to create an alumni recruitment group where they may be asked to assist in recruitment activities (i.e. host an information session, conduct candidate interviews)would they be classified as an agent?

Trisha,

Conducting business is defined as an authorized representative of the school who can enroll students and accept funds.

Then, as I understand it, Alumni can distribute and receive information at will, as long as they are not being paid by the school or allowing students to sign any forms. However, if they (alumni) are gathering names for a mailing list, or hosting a school sponsored event in the community, I fail to see how that is not "conducting business." At this point, couldn't they mislead students or misrepresent the school, albeit unintentionally? I understand that you've repeated yourself on this question, but I think the definition we need is that of "Conducting Business."

Anthony,

Agents are employed by the school and are authorized to conduct business on their behalf. Alumni are sharing their experiences and are not employees.

We are considering using Alumni to interview potential students for admission into the school. Would they be considered agents then?

Liu,
Alumni do not usually adopt that role. They are an excellent source for leads and testimonials.

Patty,

Your explanation is very useful. What I would add to Mr. Bates (excellent question) is "would the Alumni need to be involved in the admissions meetings that decide weather or not a candidate gets in to the program?"

Thank you for your help.

Yusisleidy,
When an alumni conducts business on behalf of the school, they are an agent. If they are just giving a testimonial, they are not.

Michael,

If they are just providing information, no. They cannot conduct business.
