The importance of making sure the student understands what they sign.
I bring this up because over the years there have unfortunately been situations where an admissions rep will fly through the paper work with the prospective student and ask them to sign it.
I think its important that we make sure we encourage the prospective student to ask any questions they may have, and make sure they understand what they are signing, before they sign it. I think it's important to slow down take our time and go over the information on the enrollment agreement with them in detail. This simple practice will benifit the student, the rep, the school and the industry.
The Enrollment Agreement between the student and the school is very important. A student needs to understand what it states. If there are any questions, these need to be clarified. When the student knows the representative cares, it gives the student confidence in the representative and the school.
I agree. It is very important to go over all documents with the student and any supporter that is there. At the end of each document it is important to ask if they have any questions. Once all the documents have been reviewed it is important to ask if they need you to go over any other document prior to them submitting their application.
I agree that is vital that we as admissions reps slow down during the enrollment agreement to help that student understand fully what they are agreeing to. That student is expecting us to translate all of this information so that it is in verbage that they understand. We shouldn't move forward unless we know that the student know's the details. I also agree with the point that this practice is good for all parties involved, the student, the rep and the school.
you wouldnt sign a car lease or laon w/o thoroughly understanding what you are signing. Signing and understanding the enrollment agreement is as important as a car house loan etc...if student doesnt understand then we have mis-represented the school
I like to have the agents go over the catalog along with the enrollment agreement. There are so many great sections in the catalog on student protection, academic expectations, mission statements, graduation requirements and so on. We strive for every student to consider this an investment to their future. Typically if you go over every detail and make sure the new student understand fully you end up with a dedicated and excited new student.
In the past, a lot of institutions have gotten a lot of scrutiny when it comes to this. It is extremely important for admissions representatives (as well as financial aid representatives) to thoroughly discuss the paperwork each student is signing. We must also double check with the students to ensure understanding. Students may have questions regarding the paperwork but are not comfortable with asking.
I'm new to asmissions and completely agree that students should fully understand what they are signing. Besides slowing down and taking our time going over the information, are there any other tips you can give me to make sure they are actually listening and not just going through the steps?
I totally agree and feel it is most important to go over each form with the student as they are completing them. Even reading through it to be sure the student understands. Since our paperwork is in Broadleaf I emphasize to the student that they can review and print these forms from home as well.
Agreed. The students need to be aware of what they are signing. They need to be informed of all the reprocussions and the ins and outs of the contract about to be signed.
I have worked in a variety of positions where my co workers have glossed over the paperwork or flown through it so fast to get the sale closed and the customer out the door. That does you and your business no good to have them go out the door only to have the customer come back after a sleepless night or two as they do not understand or signed something they may not be fully committed to do. When the customer comes back in, it is sometimes not easy to regain the persons trust, and it could lead to the word getting out that your organization is not forth coming and truthful.
Absolutely! It is vital to the students well-being to know what they are signing. They need to know the gravity of the decisions they are making and the agent needs to make sure the student fully understands what they are signing.
I find this occurs with a lot of the younger applicants. They are very excited and want to focus on the end result. I feel that using a slower pace and emphasis on particular information will help furture students comprehend and retain important information. I always ask for any additioal questions at the end of the presented information and use some wait time before moving on or having the applicant sign any documents.
It is said so often, but it is so important to read and understand anything before signing it. This definitely applies to students, the difference is that so much of that responsibility falls on the trusted agent in this situation.
Always read ANYTHING before you sign it. Simple as THAT.
I totally agree with this. Many times after the student has gone through the whole presentation and tour reps sometimes get in a get them signed and on their way.We have to continue to work and integrity making sure that the student completely understand what they are about to embark on financially and the importance of completing what they start so that in the end they are able to take care of the financial obligation that comes after they finish their program.
Alot of students just skim through the documents so they can hurry and get it done. I make sure to make it a priority for them to read what they are signing at all times.
I definitely agree with this point. In my past experience, I encourage the student, along with support system(parents/significant other) to read each statement in the enrollment agreement carefully. It is important they know exactly what they are getting into, and we are able to answer any questions.
