The Purpose of Regulatory Oversight
What do you consider to be the main purpose for the regulation of career schools and colleges?
Two institutions could stand side by side offering the same programs at the same cost, but only one is recognized by multiple different accrediting bodies. Do we have to guess which would offer a better hire rate after graduation? Regulatory oversight keeps substandard institutions from flooding the workforce with substandard employees.
To ensure that we are giving each and every student what they are paying for followed by a focus on placement.
Keeping everyone honest. It's not supposed to be about money, it's about the student and their education.
Regulation keeps standards set for all schools. This lets all students see things the same in any program or school. It also requires schools to maintain a high standard and not become a "diploma mill" or have other issues.
So true...whenever money is involved the potential for fraud exists. The purpose of the Regulatory board is to ensure that schools develop meaningful programs and then follow through on that promise.
To do what the school says it is supposed to do. We've had prospective students come to us - very skeptical - because another school promised one thing and basically left with their money. Following through on your promise to the students builds trust, integrity and from a business stand point: referrals.
The main purpose for the regulation of career schools and colleges is to provide the education. To guide the students with our knowledge and expertise.
I feel that the main purpose of regulatory oversight is to help ensure a school achieves and maintains at least a certain (minimum) level of educational standards. This will enable the student to enter the workforce, after graduation in their field of study, prepared for the job that they will be required to do.
The purpose of regulatory oversight should be to keep schools at a higher standard. So graduates know that they will be ready for the work force once they graduate. Also students want to attend a school that is competative in todays job market.
The main reason for this, is making sure the schools provide what was promised to the students upon enrollment, and what the students are working and paying for.
The main purpose of regulation is to ensure a quality education based on competency and skill. This involves helping students on an individual basis and in group and adherence to standards set forth, but also doing the "right thing".
Jennifer,
"A quality education produces quality individuals for the workforce." Thanks Jennifer for this observation. In the end, producing quality and skilled graduates for the workforce is at the heart of our unified mission, the reason for our existence, the result of an on-point and compliance-culture-based institution!

Ruth Ann,
This cuts to the chase! Standing by your word and fulfilling promises made - integrity builds trust! Thanks!

The purpose is to ensure that career based colleges/schools are providing what they promise to provide.
I believe that the main purpose of having regulations is to give the student the education that they were promised. This includes teaching them the hands-on skills, the information needed for them to pass their boards, and be able to perform in the job market; but this also includes all the soft skill. By having regulations, and following them, this allows us as instructors to lead by example.
I consider the main purpose for the regulation of career schools and colleges is to ensure that the schools are meeting the states requirements for higher education. This ensures that the school can receive title IV funding, which allows students to attend the school. It also helps to ensure that schools are providing a quality education. A quality education produces quality individuals for the workforce.
The main purpose is to ensure that the career schools and colleges will provide the education that was promised to the student along with meeting standards and guidelines to obtain that goal.
It lends credibility to the institution and allows for Title IV funding, without which we may not have any students.
