The tool that I currently use to help me address most challenges are: Department of Labor and Statistics, Success rate or our program through the Florida Board of Nursing (3 party)and written statement from graduating students.
Noemi,
It's very powerful for you to have so many resources for a student. Thanks for sharing!
Dr. Jean Norris
I always make sure I understand where the student is coming from. Our institution provides assistance to students for many of the things they require for the class, like programs that provide financial aid, local clinics that can provide the requirements for the class. It's best to know where the student is coming from.
Kim, Nice job! Thank you for sharing.
Dr. Jean Norris
Julie, Empathy is a best practice, nice job. How does it differ from sympathy?
Dr. Jean Norris
I use Internal tool and external tool to address challenges. I use internal tool by showing prospective student school brochure, course outline, catalog to help student get more school information. For external tool I also show student passing rate, job placement.
I currently use empathy to address the challenges I have come across being in admission. I put myself in the prospective students situation to have an idea of what they are going through to helps me understand what they may need. This tool of using empathy helps students to be more comfortable with me helping them with the challenges that they may have. I also have found that being patient and asking questions I am able to acknowledge their feelings and allow the student to find their own solution. This has worked very well for me.
Quiannia, Using the technique of sharing others stories can be very helpful! After listening, what is something else you can do to discover options for the challenges?
Dr. Jean Norris
I feel that when prospect students have challenges then they need options. I like to listen first, then give options, and add examples of students that have had similar challenges! I like to add the outcomes of the similar students that had the same challenges and how they overcame that challenge.
Maria,
Another great post! Yes, these are excellent sources of information that can reduce (or even avoid) anxiety. Going to school is stressful enough for some people, isn't it? Do you have someone at your school assigned to finding these resources? Who takes ownership of this task at your campus?
Dr. Jean Norris
Bus route
affordable childcare in the community
BLS
Career Services
financial aid
knowing what tools are available for your prospective is important, they will see you can help them along their journey and it will reduce their anxiety
Humberto,
Great point! Listening is key when helping students to make the best decision for their future. How does this tool help you, specifically?
Dr. Jean Norris
Listen, Listen, Listen...
It is all about listening, most of the time the prospects have their own solution.
Can you give us an example of when you have used this approach with success?
Dr. Jean Norris
In order to make a direct approach to address Challenges you must find the area of interest appropriate to the student and apply it.That will lead to a sure success.
That's great Farida. How do you typically normalize the situation? What approach do you take?
Dr. Jean Norris
Totally agree. I think normalizing situations has been my best approach when addressing challenges.
It looks like your maximizing the use of your resources. Keep up the great work!
Dr. Jean Norris
The tools that I am currently using are almost everything that was mentioned in power point, from tours, school PowerPoint, videos, and flyers. Yes so far has been working, my enrollment has increased tremendously.
Great point! Think of how empowered the student feels when they find their own solutions to their challenges. If you can provide additional resources that your school offers after hearing the students' solution you can provide added support to that decision. Thank you for your post.
