Our course materials are distributed on the first day of class to all students. Each student is provided with all their books, highligters, etc. - all that they will need to take the course. The students are required to sign off that they have received the material,as well. Distributing the course material on the first day of class ensures that students get what they need in a timely manner.

During the first 8 days students are preparing for there permits test at DMV. General Knowledge, Air Brakes and Combination Vehicle are the 3 parts of the permit they will take once they Complete a drug test and DOT physical. The book they use that first week is a free one that you can obtain at any DMV. The other textbooks are handed on the 8th day of training. These include textbooks and workbooks.

Richard,

Hi! It sounds like your school is fastidious about their requirements. What do the students participate in during the first 8 days?

Cindy Bryant

Our school hands out textbooks on the 8th day of school after the drug test and DOT physicals. We require all of the students to sign for the books they receive. Also students intial for any fees and will get a copy of this.

Laura,

Hi! This is a great way to make your "late enrollments" feel comfortable until they receive their own books.

Cindy Bryant

Our students are given their books and supplies on the first day of class. They also receive a school catalog when they interview with the admissions department.

Program materials (books, uniforms and supplies) are distributed on the first day of class for all packaged students. For students that are not packaged (ex. - late enrollments) they are provided with 'loaner' copies of materials for up to 5 days, so they do not fall behind, while they are completing their financial arrangments.

I am pleased to report that our program directors order and maintain a supply of books for all of our students, each cohort at a time. We have no excuse not to have materials on hand. On one occasion we did change books rather quickly when the publisher had not printed enough of one edition. The instructors are well versed in the breadth of books available to purchase and now maintain a list of acceptable choices if that should happen again. Other course materials are also maintained by the program directors. The staff that focus on operations are aware of the need for supplies such as paper and also storage for these materials. We don't have a bookstore on campus so we feel committed to serving the student needs in this way.

Donn,

Bravo! Thank you for your quick response.

Cindy,

I'm happy to say they are the latest! Our director also maintains the library. I am secure in saying that student resources are a priority of our school management.

Donn,

Thank you for your detailed response. It sounds as if you have every avenue covered regarding the books. Are the books in your reference library the most recent edition?

Cindy Bryant

For Pell-eligible students, our institution provides students with the funds to purchase books and supplies. These funds are provided on the first day of classes. The books and supplies can be purchased from the school bookstore or from other local sources. In addition, when the student registers (2-3 weeks prior to start of program), they are provided the ISBN for the textbooks. That way students can save a substantial amount by ordering the books online. Also, every student receives, on the first day of classes, study guides for each of the individual classes within the program. Finally, we maintain a reference library containing all of the required textbooks.

Robert,

Hi, issuing books for all students prior to class is an excellent method. By doing so you cannot be perceived as discriminatory and the students are prepared on their first day.

Cindy Bryant

Our students receive all of their course material at orientation. We do this for all students, not just Title IV students.

Our students can purchase their books from the book store after registering for their classes. The books are shipped to their address within 3 days of ordering them.

Our students once registered and packaged are eligible to receive their books and or supplies from the bookstore. Those charges are placed on the student’s ledger and remain there until the funding is applied. If the student drops the course during the add/drop period and doesn't write in or damage the materials they can return them to clear their account.

Bethany,

Thank you for joining the forum. It is good to know that the students have a variety of choices to purchase materials.

Cindy Bryant

At my institution, we offer to purchase the books on behalf of the student, and have them sent out the week before classes start, as long as they have the financial aid to do so. If not, or if they opt to, they are able to buy their books on their own, trying many times to get them used for cheaper.

Our institution provides many options for our students to have access to materials. At the time of schedule we provide the student the opportunity use their Financial Aid and have us order their books for them and send them UPS before the first day of class. We also give the student the opportunity to order their books own their own by giving them ISBN numbers. Along with those two Options we provide students the opportunity to use our Library Resources along with external options of Renting and OhioLink.

At our institution once a student is enrolled they have the option of either obtaining their own books or allowing us to order them for them. If they are a brand new student with us we encourage them to allow us to order them for them to ensure that all of the proper material is ordered and that they will arrive in a timely manner in regards to the start date. Ultimately however, it is the students decision and we support them however we can.
