Exit Counseling
AT MY INSTITUTION EXIT LOAN COUNSELING CONSISTS OF VEIWING A VIDEO AND TAKING A TEST, ALONG WITH TIME SET ASSIDE FOR QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS.
I know that Exit Counseling is done with all students that are near the end of their program, but I'm not sure how our FA department handles withdraws. This course has raised my awareness as to what is required and I am more interested to see how those situations are being handled. Thanks!
The school I work for does the exit counseling the same way except we dont offer online courses so everything is done person to person
Because I just recently started working for the institution, I have not come across the information as far as loan counseling is concerned. I would assume that we conduct exit loan counseling prior to the students graduation, and then possibly later on down the road after the student has graduated just to ensure that everything they went over in the initial interview was understood.
I am in admissions but I do know we do exit counseling with ALL students past the provisional period. We are online so our FA's do phone to phone.
My previous institution would complete exit counseling whenever a student went from active to withdrawn status, to ensure compliance with DOE guidelines.
Our school does exiting counseling anytime a student leaves the school or program.
This is what our school does when approaching the completion of the program we interview student and request they go online to do loan exit interview and overall conduct an exit interview
Exit counseling is very important and my institution is careful to offer it to each student.
Janet,
HI! Welcome to the forum. What happens if a student leaves the institution without participating in exit counseling?

every single student has to do exit counseling.... it is a requirement
Exit loan counseling is conducted every month at our campus for the exiting students, either going out to externship or graduating. Default rates have decreased drastically with student loan counseling, financial literacy and exit loan couseling. This is a great effort to educate students about paying back student loans and the consequences of not paying them back.
Our financial aid office works with each student to complete their entrance and exit counseling. They will not be able to start class unless their entrance counseling has been completed and documentation sent to the fa office. Once a student reaches a certain level in the program, the financial aid office gives them their "grad pack". This is all of the paperwork each student needs to do for graduation. It is at this point that financial aid sets up specific times to complete loan counseling. Our default rates are not something that we worry about too often. Our students are well educated on their loans and what to do if they need a deference, etc.
Jessica,
While there is a need for electronic exits i.e. large populations, there is nothing better than one to one contact. :)

The student at our school do not have loans after they are done with school. Therefore loan counseling is not really needed. The student are paying for the school as they are attending. Once we start offering loans we will be having every student do loan counseling.
thats a good question, we should have more training as reps in this area?
As far as I know this institution provides it with every student
Every time a student goes to orientation they are introduced, every time a student finishes midway through their classes reminded, and when they graduate.
We conduct exit counseling about once a month for all graduates. In the hopes of assisting as many possible students understand the importance of paying back loans
