Avoiding Stereotypes

Many people have been the subject of being stereotypes. I believe everyone is the same no matter what walk of life they come from. We may not all do things in the same way, but yet we still manage to get the task done. It's kind of like the old saying... You can't judge the book by its cover...

We are all people, and we just so happen to be different. We weren't all born in the same place at the same time. Everyone has their own personality and when you're able to work with people who possess different skills and talents than you, it is a beautiful thing. You always learn something from every person you meet in life, and people will learn from you just the same.

I think it is important not to judge a book by its cover. You never know what someone is capable
of. Take time out and get to know the person, you will be surprised.

I think it's important to be empathetic when speaking to others. We are not always able to see what they are going though mentally.

Unfortunately stereotypes are everywhere. The effects of stereotype in the educational performance have been explored for specialists and professionals from diverse scientific fields. One of the most common stereotypes is related to gender differences. The implications of gender differences in the academic performance in higher education are still discussed. Nothing has been confirmed yet.

It can be difficult at technical schools. I teach at a nursing college and students have to accomplish certain tasks. As long as you emphasize the task and now how it's accomplished, you should be OK

In my first experiences with instruction a student in class was physical disabled. What I learned from that instruction was that it's important to ask if the student needs help v/s constantly offering help. When students constantly offered help to the disabled student I noticed that student frustrated. I had an opportunity to discuss the matter with the class as a whole bringing light to this perspective. Overall a good experience for all involved.

I think that we are taught to stereotype people. Our culture celebrate fitting in and not the individual and we are taught to fit things and people in boxes. We have to fight against what we are taught to fight stereotypes.

We too often and so easily express some form of stereotyping every day. Even from a quick glance our mind categorizes people. This can be contained and controlled by not allowing the initial thought to grow and by not speaking words of discrimination because we quickly place an individual in a mental box.

I totally agree. Sterotyping is one of my biggest pet peeves in life. I encourage all to never underestimate anyone.

That is extremely true. You should not judge a book by it's cover. As in life if one do not pursue some type of raport with a person you will only be judging the person by their "cover". You will never know a person until you communicate with them.

Carol,
I love your open-mindedness. I wish everyone held those same beliefs.
