Negotiating Salary’s
Should negotiating salary be considered for entry level jobs? There are so many applicants and possibly applicants with experience that would take anything based on the job market. I wasn’t sure on how aggressive one should be when negotiating.
I would agree that this is a sensitve topic for those seeking their first job right out of school. Having the knowledge on how to ask for a raise is important as knowing the proper timing. Often with entry level jobs students do not have much negotiating power if they do not have any previous experience.
This is a really good question thanks for the reply
Leah,
Good idea. We also think that there should be workshops on salary negotiation, asking for a raise, or promotion. This can be offered to students and staff alike. It is also a great offer to Alumni. Workshops give you the opportunity to serve your students and your alumni. It is so important to keep grads engaged and in contact with you school. Thanks, Susan

I am really struggling with how to integrate this into a workshop. Is there a training so that we as teachers of this can get more educated on negotiation and asking for a raise?
Joseph,
this is a great question. We definitely think that negotiation skills should be taught early on, even to entry-level grads. It's the kind of skills that are needed in every phase of the work place. New grads can learn to negotiate things like starting at a certain salary and then getting increases at certain benchmarks. There is always a place for negotiating. Thanks, Susan
