Ninh, Surveys can really help. How does your institution utilize the information provided on the surveys?
Dr. Jean Norris

We also rely heavily on surveys. It gives us feedback on the good as well as the bad.

We use evaluations at the end of each course taught. I do look at them to see which areas I can improve on as an instructor. One comment was mentioned about 3 times and so I decided to change the way I taught as far as allowing students to say "pass" if they do not like reading aloud. I realized some students are self conscious of their english and others have difficulty reading. This has taken the pressure off the students, but I still get the participation of most students and more importantly they are following along with the lecture.

Rebecca, Feedback can be so helpful! Excellent practices you have in place. Do you find them truly useful?

gamaliel, Great follow-up. What specifically tells you the students feel cared for?

My school does student surveys after the completion of each course. I review those results as well as asking for feedback in the classroom weekly.

After course student evaluations are good tools if the student/s are honest in their comments. I will say some of them will use this as their "tool" to give negative comments on their Instructor that did not give them what they want.

I think I could utrilize the follow up call method. I could use it after the first day of class to get feedback on their first day experience.

I think incorporating surveys should create an accurate analysis of how well we are doing to give good customer service.

As a customer service strategy, our school uses both a Student Satisfactory Survey, which is sent to the stundents via email every 6 months, and a Course Evauation Survey which is administered at the end of each 10 week course lecture.

At my school we started to have peer review of our teaching styles. One teacher watches another to give feedback and visa versa. It really helps improve my teaching, therefore improving service.

In the mornings, at the first break of class, I spend my break time calling and e-mailing those students who are absent to let them know I noticed their absence and that their everyday presence in class is much appreciated and needed. This seems to make them feel cared for.

Emeline, Very true. Do you find many of the suggestions are put into action?
Dr. Jean Norris
