useing intervention to try and gain knowlegde of the things that can be causeing stress and having someone talk to students to help resolve

It seems like a great program to me.

We do tack the impact of a service by analyzing the Student satisfaction survey.I would say this is the most heavily used measure.

That's a pretty comprehensive list, Irina. Do you track the impact of each service? Which support measures are the most heavily used?

That is a Great program! How is it working? I'd like to know more about it.

We have a Student Success Instructor (SSI) that monitors the sucess of the students and watches for indicators of stress or bad practices such as attendance, poor grades and discipline problems. This program in it's self has been successful, it is only one tool that is used by our Institution.

Our school provides the faculty support to the students at risk by giving them a phone call regarding missed classes, offering them tutoring before and after class. An interactive workshops designed to get students ready for final exams are offered. Veryes Learning resources available to them such as online and on the ground Learning Center,Library,Tutoring, as well as Blended programs. Academic and Financial advisers are available for ongoing support.

In my campus I publish a monthly newsletter. In this newsletter I publish results of the competitions we have as well as list all the honor roll students. The students include the newsletter in the scrap book they start building on their first day of school. In addition, I make sure I speak to the students everyday and consistently let them know I am there to help them succeed.

I know that I express tutouring to ANY student that needs or wants it. Also if I feel that I am not "reaching" the student through conversation of there concern, I will turn it over to a student advisor and then follow up with the advisor and see if there is anything further that I can do for them.

By giving constant training and support to the instructors in technical and teaching skills...by excellent management of class room and lab tools...also great individual support in areas that the instructors may need help in...all of this benefits the students to reduce stressful situations....

We have started a day one student contact program. The instructors have an extra roster sheet which they highlite the names that are absent. The management team collects the sheets and calls each of these students. There is either a message left to call back,or contact is made and the importance of being in class on day one is discussed along with options to make it to class. This can range from a session change to transportation or just a matter of a wake up call. We have use this method for the last 3 course cycles, which last 3 weeks each, and have seen a drop in the failure rates. At first it was just a decimal amount and the last course cycle we have seen close to 2% drop of failures.

The campus is full of caring and committed instructors and faculty. Our Student Services department is here to support the students through counselors and advisors. They are committed to focusing on the needs of students such as housing, food, and other hardships.

This is a wonderful practice to encourage commitment, I am trying to think what our school could do on a smaller scale in regards to rewards! Thanks for the suggestions

Well, this department was created before I started almost 5 years ago and we have been doing the meetings for that long as well. It is pretty structed and there is a policy to go along with everythign we do so I dont see why it would be difficult to implement. As for the Ambassador program, we started that about 1.5 years ago. It has taken some time to get that structed like we want it but it has paid off.

For student activities, they money for them is included in a budget that we plan out at the beginning of every fiscal year so we plan well in advance for everything that we do. We give the students alot of input in the activities that we do as well to ensure that we do things they want to take part in.

Our budget has definitely decreased with the way the economy is but we plan that out in advance and look to do more activities that cost less. We do a lot of attendance contests which are free, then we do a drawing to see who will win things like gas cards, small gift certificates, etc.

Very impressive.

How long has it taken for this comprehensive program to develop? How do you fund the activities? Is there a fee charged to students? Have you been able to maintain or expand these services during the current economy?

My department is specifically designed to support and encourage students throughout their program in order to ensure that they are successful. Every student has a student services advisor. Every day that the students are not in class, if they do not call us, we call them to see if they need help with something to allow them to get back to school. We have a variety of resources readily available to assist them in overcoming any obstacles that they may face while attending our school. We also hold a minimum of two activities per month for the students like ice cream socials, BBQ's, attendance contests where they can win great prizes.
Our staff and faculty meet once per week to discuss each student that may be having academic or attendance issues, what personal issues might be affecting these students, and what action plan we need to put into place to assist those students.
We also have an awards ceremony once per month to recognize students for academic and attendance awards. We recognize these individuals at graduation as well.
We also have an ambassador program to help bridge the communication gap between staff and students to esure that we are meeting their needs.

We have Instructors call Students that are signed up but have not started classes yet, this helps our show rate and lets the Student know we're thinking about them

There are a few awards: Perfect attendance; Student of the course; deans list & a few more.
There is also a follow up when students miss class repeatedly.

What's the criteria for the Humble Hero award? How often is is given?

The first two things that come to mind when i am asked this question are the Student of the course which is given to the top performing student in each course, and the humble hero award which is given to multiple staff personel based upon nominations from there peers.
