Are the peer tutors paid? How are they evaluated? How long do they retain this position?

To the best of my knowledge, all the instructors make themselves available before and/or after classes for additional instruction. We also have peer tutors (students who have passed at least their first five classes, have a high GPA and a recommendation from at least one instructor). We have found that this is a real win/win situation for both the school and the tutors. Through teaching, the tutors are constantly reviewing previous courses and increasing their knowledge of the subject matter!

for the most part you are correct but there are students that become depressed or emotional and still have good grades and attendance so we have to watch all students behaviors.

The students in jepordy are identified by their grades and/or time missed in the class.

Advising forms, online tutoring, student tutoring, instructor tutoring. Whatever it takes to get the student the help they require to understand/comprehend the material. Our school has multiple processes in place to allow us, the instructor, to get the student help. Our managers review the rollbooks, if there is a student struggling they will ask the instructor what is being done to help the student.

What triggers the program? How are the students in jeopardy identified?

We have several actually. Depending on the severity and the proximity to course end, the student may be tutored by instructor or student tutor, counsoled by an education manager or a student services rep if that is appropiate. The instuctor tries to determine if the cause is school related or external (i.e. problems at home work etc.) All the parties work together to determine the best solution and strategy for student success.

Hi Loren,
Our school has 4 different programs that a student can enroll in. An automotive program, a diesel program, an auto/diesel program, and an auto/diesel/industrial program. They vary from 11 months to 18 months in length. All of our programs are diploma programs. There are core classes that are included in all programs. In addition, we have elective programs in Ford and Toyota that can increase the program length another 2 to 3 months.

Does your school have a progression of outcomes? [ex. certificate, diploma, associate degree, bachelor] If so, is the curriculum common for all the offerings, with length of enrollment determining the credential earned?

At our school, we have a team of individuals that meet with students that want to program change. Program changes, especially from a longer to a shorter one, could indicate a student may want to leave school for a variety of reasons. During the interview process, a member of this team can then determine what the reason is for the program change and get the individual on a path for success. As beneficial as this process is, it ultimately requires the student to be the initiator of the process. At times, this can be a little late. The team is responsible for advising the student as to their options for this program change.

At this institution we have a program called the student in jepordy program. Here the managment gets in touch with the instructor, or the student if nessecary, to see if there is anything we can do to help them out when they are having issues that are causing their grades to suffer.

We, as instructors, need to keep an eye on our students' grades and behavior. If we notice changes in either one of these, this is possibly an indication something could be wrong. I believe it is our responsibility to talk with the student and see if we can determine what is going on and see if the student is willing to share with us. If it is an financial issue, we can have them meet with someone from financial aid and see if there is a way they financial department can help. If the problem is a grading issue, then we as instructors can discuss with them ways to improve their grades. If it is a behavior issue, we can send them to the counselor.

At our school we monitor the grades as they receive them and coach anyone that is falling below the mark before they get to a point where we can not help them turn it around. We discuss their sleep habits, eating habits, study habits and so on to help them make necessary changes to improve their grades.

send them to FA

Do you have any thoughts about alternatives, James?

Our institution employs a computer system that tracks all student comments, not for their transcripts, just for our own reference. This way it is easy to see if a student issue has presented in the past, or is a result of a resent event.

In our school we get new metarial for the course to keep it new

Our school is in the automotive industry and is constantly bombarded by news of dealerships closing and no work available. i often talk about how easy it still is for a qualified tech to find work, the slow times simply weed out the under qualified people trying to do a job they are not suited for. Also, no matter what happens in this country, we love our vehicles and they are not going any where. no one takes thier car to India or the philipenes for service, they do it right here in thier own neighborhoods.

We have implemented something called student in jeopardy. We keep an eye on students starting to get low scores on the tests; and let them know we can provide the help they need to make the grade.

Well the Financial department hands them. But they give it back to the student if they don't old the school money.
