We actually have several intervention practices that are utilized here at the campus. First and foremost, the instructor remains the first line of defense. If the instructor sees the need for further intervention (depending on the situation) he can escort the student to a counselor, student pantry, student tutors, on-line tutoring, loan options (ie living expense loans), part-time job assistance, transportation options and referral services(drug treatment/community assistance programs/food programs) to name a few.

We have peer students to help students who are struggling with classwork.

In our first course employment is very active. They visit many times and give out fresh job leads and follow up on all students to see where they are in the job field. This helps spur them along in finding a job and keeps the students from falling short.

We have a policy when a student wants to take a leave of absence or with draw he or she has to get a form and sit and talk to the instructor and an education manager about the reason this opens up opportunity for helping the student so he or she may remain in school

We closely monitor attendance. We have found that students missing more than 6 hours out of each 90 hour course may be experiencing Academic Erosion or Academic Stagnation. We make contact with these students and offer assistance as needed.

Students are encouraged to seek the assistance of the Student Services Dept. There are those employed there who have experience in counseling students and are familiar with our particular institution's students' concerns. Beyond that, each instructor is coached on which methods may be utilized to help keep the students sharp and interested. I read here for the first time about the practice of using web-based intervention strategies, and it seems the idea has merit considering that the majority of our students are younger adults and very much web oriented.

anything that has to do with financial, I let the financial aid department deal with the student

We do have a similiar program in place for students returning after any type of break in the program.reardless if it is attendance failure, financial or l.o.b.,
They must re-apply, getting this approved by all departments prior to re-attending the program.
Because we in our department are what is reffered to as a lock step program; (a program where they must pass one course before moving onto the next course, which is also 17 courses long), and being a very fast paced program, it is often that to much time away can affect there success within the program.
With this it is very important that all re-attending applicants are carefully screened and understand what it is going to take for them to stay on track for succesful completeion.

At our school we have a very low percentage that drop out and if they do they usually talk to financial aid or student services. They do a great job in helping the student with any problem that they have.

One way to avoid students from feeling stress is by allowing them the opportunity to speak with the school counsel which can bring up their moral from low to high povided a student share how he or she feels about him or herself.
In manay circumtances we see some competing for student of the phase which for them is a highly honor for employers look at them different if they achieve such prize so to speak.
We as faculty member must encourage them to move on forwared with their education, we can influence their dominor by leting them know what the future hold for them if they continue to persue their goals and how that can change their lives.

Be a part of the learning experiences not just a lecturer, ask questions and involve all students’ during discussions. Look around during lectures to see how your students are responding, keep track of students who seem not interested or maybe struggling to understand course material. We also keep track of students via electronic roll book, so if a student has low test scores we can get them help by tutoring.

Student tracking for academic erosion or stagnation starts with the instructor. The instructor is there in the classroon to see it starting to happen in person. An instuctor needs to be able to identify a troubled student. Sometimes however, you may not be able to get to them in time. this especially if it started to occur in a previous class. I have had many times where a student dropped within the first 2 days or even never showed for class in the first place, only to be told later that the student dropped out. The proper procedure for us is to alert our Ed managers and our student retention team to try to find out if anything can be done. Our recently appointed student retention team is set up to handle situations that require immediate attention and try to find resolutions for the students to keep them ongoing in their career path.

We have a lower than desired success rate in our basic electrical course. We have found that the atrisk students are usually identifiable by early test scores. If a student fails any of the tests he/she is notified in writing of the availability of such thiings as tutoring, web based suplimental course material and even the availability of other instructors. We may assign one our tutors, who are students that have already passed the course with an "A" grade, to assist the at risk student in class or during lab.

Progress reports.SMART syst. lets us go deep into the history of students

One intervention practice at UTI that addresses academic stagnation is to closely moniter lab exercises for 100% completion-quality and quantity-and also monitor students'text books for lecture notes.Another practice is to ask thought-provoking,open-ended questions.

It seems that in these poor economic times that the students are facing more problems with loans then before. With this it seems to add more stress to the education they are trying to receive.

What we are instructued to do is send them directly to the financial aid dept

We as education managers are assighned a block of students that we will be in constant contact with as they proceed through their courses. We assist them if they are having any issues with grades and attendance or any other situations that they might have. This should create a relationship between staff and students to buld that trust.

We remind the students offten about there main goal when they started school. we let them know where they can be when they finish school.

this sound like agreat idea, sometimes the people that are supposed to help are busy or the students dont trust them!! a lot of times they've tried to talk to the staff and didn't feel the people cared. so this might work!!!.
