An intervention strategy that the institution adresses is academic erosion. Great emphasis is placed on student orientation because this allows the student to become knowledgable about school policy, financial aid, student services, career services, administrative advice, tutoring, library,
technical services.Students receive the support, care and nurture they need beginning their college career.

We have early alerts forms which can be completed prior to mid-terms and we also have mid-term counseling forms. If a student still needs help after that we will sit down with them on a needed basis.

Rochelle, how long do these mid-term counseling sessions last? Are they in class or scheduled outside of class time? If a student is C or below for multiple courses, do they have multiple counseling sessions?

Loren Kroh

Anna, do you have any usage data re: who and how often students access their grades? Is there any correlation between grades and interest?

Loren Kroh

One of our intervention practices includes mid-term counseling performed by the instructors. We also have a documentation system allowing us to track every encounter with the student, which may include advisments sessions with the instructor prior to the actual mid-term counseling session. These methods allow instructors to identify and either intervene and/or refer for further assistance if a student is affected by at-risk behavior. Mid-term counseling sessions are mandated for all students with a "C" average or below and may be used for other students as positive reinforcement.

We have a computerized program in which the students can access their current grade status @ any time. We also present each student with a midterm breakdown of their grade along with written recommendations from the instructor for those who are at risk.

DeAnn, how often do the probation students take advantage of the extra help? Is it a requirement to getting off probation?

Loren Kroh

Heather, how are these forms and the eventual outcome tracked? Has the system been effective? Are results part of employee evaluation?

Loren Kroh

Amy, are your admissions reps involved with issues throughout the entire period of enrollment? What's their role in problem solving?

Loren Kroh

heidi, what's the magic number of missed days? Does the solution include both the classroom and "life" problems?

Loren Kroh

We also do academic and attendance evaluations for students. If they are not reaching their 70% that is required we put them on a probation and offer to either come in early or stay after to help them to get academics up as well as make up some hours.

Our school does Early Warning Advising Forms. This form is used when a student has missed 10% or more of class, failed two consectutive assignments, failed to turn in assignments, not passing at the midway point, etc. This form has a place to fill out the problem, the students prospective and an action plan. This form must also be followed up. The instructor gives the initial form, but if they feel that they have not connected with the student or the student fails to follow any of the action steps, then the Program Director steps in. If the problem is a personal issue that may require more assistance, we have a student services staff that sttudents can seek assistance from or that we can refer students to.

School counselors, and Instructors that help them to run their own race.

Our intervention practice is to have daily meetings with instructors and admissions reps where they report any potential issues with students. They then contact the student and encourage them to come to the campus to meet with either the program chair or the director of education, who then begins discussions related to the problem and the student's options.

My school monitors students at risk by contacting each Instructor for an up to date report on the student's progress and attendance. The student advisor meets with the student to assist with support and mentoring.

If a student misses too many days the program director and the director of education sits them down and discusses why they have been absent so often. They then try to help the student find a solution

Thank you for sharing this way of tracking students. I didn't think could be used with Adult learners, I'll be proposing it to boost attendance/academic performance in my school.

We get our students involved with them teaching some of their class mates who are having trouble digesting the material either because of a language differance or education deficiancy

Steven, what are the criteria to determine green, yellow or red status? Is this attendance function integrated into a grading system?

We have a online attendence function that has a button that allearts all other instructors and those oin admin if a problem exist with a student and we mark the severity based on our opinion green flag, yellow flag and red flag. Our admin respnds to the reverse order, red first and so on and usually when it gets to this level we sole the problem as a group
