Jacqueline,
What was it that your mentors did that had such a profound impact on you?
Jeffrey Schillinger
I have had an oportutity to have several mentors throughout my life. The mentoring has help me to achieve several of my life goals. Without the advice of my mentors I can't say what the end would have presented.
Doris,
Thanks for sharing this post. It is rare that someone lists a spouse as their mentor. What are one or two specific things he does, or has done, to position himself as your mentor?
Jeffrey Schillinger
My husband has been a great mentor in my life. He has always encouraged me that there is nothing I can't do.
In a previous job, I had a mentor that showed me patience during the learning process. I have modeled my delivery after his and have had good success.
My mentor was my dental instructor. The way that she taught us with compassion and allowing us to have fun while learning but also being stern and professional has molded me into the instructor that I am with my students.
Patricia,
What do you mean by "superior?"
Jeffrey Schillinger
Any superior will have some impact on our life
Christopher,
My father was my primary mentor as well. Thanks for this post.
Jeffrey Schillinger
My father has been my primary mentor throughout my life. He has pushed me to achieve my best no matter what I was pursuing. I say no matter what for a reason because a lot of my interests were not his, thus he listened and excepted my interests and merely focused on me being successful. These principles have been a large part of my classroom approach, in that it is important to not blanket teach everyone because they all do not have the same goals. Understanding each students background and interests allows me to deliver material to individuals based on this knowledge, to which the students feel that this attention is more relevant to their goals.
David,
Thanks for this post. What are one or two specific things this mentor did for you that you can do for your students?
Jeffrey Schillinger
I believe I've had many mentors, although we didn't call them mentors at the time. Maybe the most memorable mentor was a provost who helped me realize I could acheive higher-order knowledge and abilities. He gave me a vision and the belief in myself that I could do more. A big part of doing more was being able to do more for others, too. I would like to think I can provide that type of inspiration for those that now come to me for advise and counsel.
my mentors saw more leadership in me, than I knew I had. They pushed me to be better than I thought I was capable of being, and celebrated my successes throughout my life!
Richard,
Thank you for this heartfelt post. What are some specific things you do to try to bring these messages to your students?
Jeffrey Schillinger
I have had many mentors in life but two that have had the most impact is my Father and my Heavenly Father. My earthly Father taught me that life is full of pitfalls and disappointments but they become learning lesson to grow from. He taught me that to succeed in anything you have to work hard and give it your all. My Heavenly Father has taught me to be honest, caring, and loving all which have made me a better person and someone students will look to for mentorship.
Magdeleine,
How do you use this experience to motivate and inspire your students?
Jeffrey Schillinger
Mine 9th grade teacher is the reason that I am a nurse today because I wanted to call it quit but she told me that education was the only way out of poverty
Cara,
What does it mean to "put students first?" What are specific behaviors that demonstrate this?
Jeffrey Schillinger
I have had many mentors in my life, but the one that stands out the most is a Chef instructor I had a college. She always put her students first and always wanted the best for us. She told us the truth not only about our skill set, but what we should be working towards in life. I always use what she has passed on to me and I now pass on to my students.
Angela,
You were fortunate to have this person in your life, twice!
