I like to tell stories that connect student life with real world success
I like to tell about my experiences on the job, the good and the bad. Learning experiences not only about what I have done but, what some of my friends and other technicians have been through helps them understand taht you can survive through both the good and the bad.
with students experiencing so many instructors during their time at school, they find the similarities of true life experience. and alot of the time they comment thats what another instructor said. so ist just reinforcement of what they may see in there careers.
I use a lot of real life examples. Why not? After all, discussing real life examples with students helps them to see that we are not trying to patronize them, but rather, we understand the dilemmas that searching for a job or other opportunity can present. Connecting student life with the real world excites students and shows them that anything is possible if the right persistence and motivation are thrown into the mix.
Yes Christopher, those stories help impart subject matter to real life examples:-)

using real life experiences when connecting with students helps show how their training came in handy
I agree. Anecdotal learning is effective and fun. I like telling a story that relates to the material in order to build a connection between knowledge and real world experience.
Real life events can truley help students under stand what they are going to expierience in the real world.
Excellent. Work place and war stories always add color and create interest.

This is it, as I am teaching a subject I use some of my experiance stories to bring the message into the real work world. You can just watch the students eyes open up as they see the subject matter become related to the work they will be doing. Questions fly and dicussions become a great thing as well, big group involvement begings.
i agree, i think real world topics help relate the reality of there education
Letting students know how what they are learning in school will be applied in the real world is especially critical for those students that know little about the profession to begin with. I try to be realistic with my students and let them know that in a tough economy like this, there is a glut of graduates and in order to stand out they need to be as competent in all parts of the job as possible. These stories from my personal experience can help place value on tasks they find less favorable.
The idea is to use all senses. Especially use touch, audio, and visual. Then, your message will get through.

Stories are the backbone of the teaching profession. Students, especially in a technical field, seem to be visual learners. When we as instructors can paint a visual picture of an event we took part in, they seem to get a better grasp on what we are talking about.
I try to make my class as relevant as possible - many people just do not see how science is a huge part of their every day lives. Once they see this, they tend to focus on the class more and this aids in them staying in school and seeing that all of their class have personal and practical applications.
Christopher, the students tend to remmeber those types of real world stories. I, also, share storied related by our Board of Advisors during our meetings. I stress that our Department meets with the Advisory Board to ensure that we are teaching skills needed in the industry. The conversation is continued with the examples of employers "likes and dislikes" when searching for prospective employees.
I use stories that show mistakes, with the prerequisite that my mistakes are pattented, so if they make my mistakes they have to pay me
I always talk about my past work experiences, things I did right or wrong. I really concentrate on the things that I learned on the job that I saw other people do.
Awesome. Students typcially like to stay in contact and they probably would like to use you as a references. Good linkage.
