Ruth, try to think of this in a different way. What rules are enforced by one employer may not be the same rules by another. The common ground here is every situation is different and students need to learn early that what may be acceptable in one situation may not be in another. By asking questions and reading the policies and regulations of any environment is really the only true way of knowing acceptable from unacceptable behavior. One size rarely fits all and the sooner students learn this reality the more prepared they will be for the real world. Nothing wrong with having this conversation with your students.
