Best practices, action plans, successes and challenges!

I am a new instructor. I am both nervous and excited. This program is very informative and have given me the tools necessary to complete my tasks. I will attempt to implement all the new tools to engage students. I believe pre-planning is essential.

ED 106

Learned alot about how students react to instructors.

Best Practices

Good course in regards to knowing your students and being prepared for class.  Very informative.

rolling powerpoint

Placing a rolling powerpoint about a specific topic for students arriving to the class has enhance their desire to learn more about that particular topic.

This is very good tool to change up the lecture days to involve the student more and break it up through out the time during lectures.

messy desk, less student respect

1.  I frequenty have a messy desk.  We have very limited work and storage areas and my books and papers are stacked on my desk.  I know where they are located though.  I can easily find them.  I will make an effort to make my desk more organized though we infrequently have students in the the faculty area.

2.  Managing "diffuclt students" many of the suggestions were very helpful. I intend to imiplement the "observer" technique with the know-it-all student.  I have already initiated group work with my students which was very successful.

ED101

It is my goal to prepare for classes by incorporating materials and resources for different learning styles. I hope to model professionalism is the classroom as well as motivate my students for learning. By following the 5 C's and being prepared for class I feel my students will benefit and have a better chance at success.

Cornell Notes and Role Play

I have incorporated the use of cornell notes in the classroom. I use the cornell notes as a way to help students learn how to take effective notes in class, stay engaged with lecture and follow along with the information while highlighting important points. The cornell notes also serve as a study guide giving students the main ideas of what to study with additional detail. I have also incorporated role play activities that allow the students to practice and implement their learning through the demonstrationg of in their skits and role play. These two things make the classroom active, fun… >>>

Active Learning Strategies

We must be agents of change! I usually incorporate Active Learning Strategies in my classrrom setting. I have several activies according to the class objectives. The students feel motivated and retained the concepts learned during class.

Active Learning

I believe that during three hour lectures that it is essential to have the students participate in active learning during that time. This keeps the students engaged in hte learning. If they are required to do some of the teaching to their peers, they are taking ownership of the material. Also, the students tend to listen in a different manner to their classmates. I make sure that they actually get up and do physically active demonstrations.

Action Plan

As the new MA PD for the ECPI Emerywood campus, I am excited about working with students and faculty in an effort to achieve gainful employment for students who successfully pass the curriculum requirements for this program. In order to achieve the goal of student transition successfully into the workforce, I am planning on implementing a 3 pronged initiative over the next days, weeks, and months.

By working with instructors, reviewing student transcripts, and speaking with current/former Externship site/Employers of MAs. I want to find areas of weakness in the delivery of educational content and skills that ultimately lead to… >>>

Challenge

What do you do to overcome the obsacle of learning that is the result of students who do not prepare for class? It makes it difficult to proceed with classroom activities when the students do not do the outside reading or review that is necessary to be able to complete activities or participate in classroom discussions on the content or application of the content.

Active learning methods

I have broaden by knowledge about classroom teaching.  I am going to add active learning method more in my classroom teaching.  I have used some active learning tools but this has expanded my understanding for implementation in the classroom.

Blending of Student Levels of Knowledge

I have some students who are younger with natural skills in networking, notetaking & the use of technology. I also have older students that are more adept to pen & paper, drawings, & hands on tasks.  By blending instruction to include all of these basically puts all of my students on the same footing.  It almost forces the younger & older students to work together toward a common goal.

Teaching Strategies

I have over 15 years of teaching experience; however, taking this course allowed me to realize some things that I could be doing as an instructor that would be more beneficial for my students.  While taking this course I thought about my past classes and realized what I have missed.

Instructional delivery

Had some good points made in assessing students in a lab setting.

do the right thing was a tuff assignment

I am challenged to learn more about representation and legal issues with compliance and doing the right thing to help provide the best knowledge and honest communication with students that are to enroll in our school.  Just wish I knew how to beable to redo the final assessment test now that I have learned and reviewed material.

Flipping the Class

I have found that the students like the Inquiry based assignments.  They engage with each other which helps with teamwork.  It also seems the slower learning students respond well to the student that has mastered the content.  I need to work on the Homework phase, online videos, etc.  I also need to work on leading questions to facilitate the thinking process.

keep it cool

make a plan an stick too it work thru problems and keep track of difficulty's and thought processes.

engaging students

I try to engage students during lecture by asking questions about the subject. There have been times I have assigned portions of the lecture to each student and let them speak using two to three power-point slides and have them ask the questions. Students that are struggling seem to get more out of the subject.
